Why has one game, alone among the thousands of games invented and played throughout human history, not only survived but thrived within every culture it has touched? What is it about its 32 figurative pieces, moving about its 64 black and white squares according to very simple rules, that has captivated people for nearly 1,500 years? Why has it driven some of its greatest players into paranoia and madness, and yet is hailed as a remarkably powerful intellectual tool?

Story
He's been called the best in the world at the mental game of tennis. Brad Gilbert's strokes may not be pretty, but looks aren't everything. He has beaten the tour's biggest names - all by playing his "ugly" game. Now, in Winning Ugly, Gilbert teaches recreational players how to win more often without necessarily even changing their strokes. The key to success, he says, is to become a better thinking player - to recognize, analyze, and capitalize. That means out-thinking opponents before, during, and after a match - forcing him or her to play your game.

You love the game of poker, but you usually leave the game a loser. This is frustrating because you know you have what it takes to make a lot of money playing poker. You have two options: Spend nearly a decade learning from trial and error, or learn the information provided in this book. I have been a profitable player for eight consecutive years, but my approach isn't the norm. I threw everything you're supposed to do out the window and focused on what approaches to the game lead to the highest probability of long-term profits. That's it. That's all I care about: Profits!

Story
What’s the number one thing stopping you from playing your best tennis? Ian Westermann, founder of the world’s #1 online tennis instruction portal, Essentialtennis.com, will confidently say it’s an obstacle you probably never thought of: The ball. The whole point of tennis is to hit the ball over the net and in, so how can the ball be the thing that’s standing in the way? In fact, this is why the ball is such an impediment: your desire to hit a good shot, with the right mix of power and spin, to a specific spot on the court, prevents you from striking the ball the way you should.

Story
To be a golfer is to tinker-with everything from equipment to grip to swing. But one thing most players don't give enough attention to is the mental game. Psychologists aren't a new phenomenon in golf, but Dr. Michael Lardon is a different breed of performance coach. Instead of sending his players into a losing battle against emotion, indecision, and fear on the golf course, he shows them how to organize their thoughts and use them for maximum performance.

As coaches to some of golf's top players, Pia Nilsson and Lynn Marriott have designed and refined a revolutionary way of teaching the game, with great results. They don't believe in prescribing the same stance, grip, and swing to everyone, followed by hours of purposeless drilling. They don't even believe in beginning with physical technique. Their success has proven to them that a great game begins with a great vision. Every Shot Must Have a Purpose offers cutting-edge techniques for integrating the physical, technical, mental, emotional, and social parts of a player's game.

Story
On the one hand we aren’t surprised by the uncertainty of everyday life, but on the other we believe that success can be analyzed and planned for. It is a revealing paradox. The implications are explosive and they obliterate every common-sense notion we have about strategy and planning. The Click Moment is about two very simple but highly provocative ideas.

Great History lesson along with simple explanation!
I understood the basic movements of the pieces, Played a handful of times since I was young. A recent invitation by my brother-in-law AND my mother to play chess has sparked an interest. Listening to this short book, I feel educated and and much more ready to take on a new journey of learning the game of Chess! Would recommend to any beginner, even if they already understand somewhat how the game works.

Simple, Straightforward, Helpful
It's a quick and basic breakdown of the history, rules, and points of the game. Good for total beginners or someone who is only partly familiar with the game. The end includes a general theory of effective play and a basic strategy to try.

Great for rules and logistics
As far as strategies there's really only 1 basic opening strategy discussed...which is fine for a beginner book. This book does a great job discussing the rules for each piece and the logistics of board setup.
