Publisher's summary

From the best-selling author of Alone and The Killing Hour comes a thriller that goes from heartbreaking to heartstopping in the blink of an eye.…When someone you love vanishes without a trace, how far would you go to get them back?

For ex-FBI profiler Pierce Quincy, it’s the beginning of his worst nightmare: a car abandoned on a desolate stretch of Oregon highway, engine running, purse on the driver’s seat. And his estranged wife, Rainie Conner, gone, leaving no clue to her fate.

Did one of the ghosts from Rainie’s troubled past finally catch up with her? Or could her disappearance be the result of one of the cases they’d been working - a particularly vicious double homicide or the possible abuse of a deeply disturbed child Rainie took too close to heart?

Together with his daughter, FBI agent Kimberly Quincy, Pierce is battling the local authorities, racing against time, and frantically searching for answers to all the questions he’s been afraid to ask. One man knows what happened that night. Adopting the alias of a killer caught eighty years before, he has already contacted the press. His terms are clear: he wants money, he wants power, he wants celebrity. And if he doesn’t get what he wants, Rainie will be gone for good. Sometimes, no matter how much you love someone, it’s still not enough.

As the clock winds down on a terrifying deadline, Pierce plunges headlong into the most desperate hunt of his life, into the shattering search for a killer, a lethal truth, and for the love of his life, who may forever be...gone.

Not just a story, but a healing story

I recognized my own healing journey and saw my own courage to heal. Excellent! I recommend this story to anyone that needs to know that they're not alone in their pain. Healing is a long dark night, but there's light at the end of the hard work. I cried and I laughed. Exactly what I needed. Thank you Lisa.

Great book!

LOVE most of Lisa Gardner's books. Not too big a fan of DD Warren books. Anna Fields makes them even better. I kinda read this series backwards, but Still LOVE the story. Want to meet me a Mack.

Exciting

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, if they're into thrillers. Lisa Gardner is always good.

Did the plot keep you on the edge of your seat? How?

Yes. It's not your typical story. This is not a feel good easy to listen to book. You have to actually pay attention. You have to think.

What about Anna Fields’s performance did you like?

Love her.....all her stuff...always have. I hate knowing she will never be able to do new ones. Thanks Anna :)

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

No. Too long.

Any additional comments?

Gardner always writes great stories. They are funny, sad, dark, exciting..in a word complicated. You never know just how it's gonna end. She doesnt always leave you feeling happy. I like happy, that's why it did not get 5 stars.

Good read

I really enjoy Lisa Gardener's books. I like to knit while I listen to these stories. It is so engrossing that I get a lot more done on my project than anticipated. I would recommend these books to anyone who enjoys a good mystery without an abundance of blood and gore.

fast paced, twisty, tense and sharp!

I love Lisa Gardner. I especially love the DD Warren series, but I also love the FBI Profiler series. It's a bonus for me that so many of her stories take place in Oregon where I am from.
So many mystery novels, or psychological suspense novels, build up and then fall flat, or they never really grab you. or the end is like meeeeeeeeh. This is never the case with Lisa Gardner. Her books grab you and don't let go until the end. There's always twists you never expect, and occasionally a gut punch that has you saying WHOA! There just top of the line, among the best in the game.
If you enjoy police procedural type novels, this won't be for you. This is more an in depth character study, but the tension is there and it builds for the entire novel. Just a really solid, well written suspenseful adventure.
well worth the credit. well worth the time. the narration does sometimes feel blah, she only has one man voice but it's good. Definitely a good narration.
