About this listen

THE FIRST NOVEL IN LEE CHILD'S #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING JACK REACHER SERIES—NOW AN ORIGINAL SERIES ON PRIME VIDEO!

“From its jolting opening scene to its fiery final confrontation, Killing Floor is irresistible.”—People

Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.

“Combines high suspense with almost nonstop action. Reacher is a wonderfully epic hero: tough, taciturn, yet vulnerable.” (People)

“Great style and careful plotting. The violence is brutal...depicted with the kind of detail that builds dread and suspense.” (The New York Times)

I've listened to a couple jack reacher novels and most are good, this is not my favorite. this story is a little long and has some unnecessary parts but the story is integral to Jack's life. At the beginning, Dick Hill hadn't yet settled into the jack reacher voice that has become familiar to me but halfway through i did hear reacher's voice come alive.

a good one

I came to these stories via the Tom Cruise movie and the Amazon series. As such, I was expecting something else. I was not prepared for the story to be told in the 1st person. Nor was I expecting the reader to sound so old. I am sure Dick Hill would be an amazing fit for any number of stories; Westerns, or Mark Twain, for example. I just think he was a poor choice for this book. I also expected the character of Reacher to come across as more intelligent on the page. Over all, this was a pretty good story, with a slightly disappointing choice of narrator.

Great story. Poorly fitting performance.

I started getting Reacher books from my Dad. He'd get them. He and my Mom would read them, then pass them along to me. When I started traveling for work, I switched to audio versions. Somehow, after listening to the entire series, I realized I'd never read the very first one. Dang! the early stuff is so much more exciting. Great story. Great action sequences. Great performance. As much as I like the entire series, I'm reminded how awesome the books were before Child got bored and resentful toward the universe he created.

Somehow I missed #1

Dick Hill does a good job narrating the book. I have heard many narrators and Dick Hill is in the top 25% or so.
I like the idea of the character of Jack Reacher. I like the idea of the story, the plot details, and the scenes. What I don't care for are the overly exhaustive discriptions, the excessive amount of foreshadowing, or the way his very intelligent characters take forever to realise the obvious.
There are 11 "inner circle" bad guys and, even though their identities are not revealed until the last few chapters, I figured out 10 of the 11 by maybe 1/4 of the way into the story. I also knew what the bad guys were doing and how they were solving their primary problem by about 1/3 of the way in.
So, the last 2/3 of the story was a long drawn out crawl to see how Lee Childs brings it all together. I find this to be highly disappointing and rather annoying.
I have listened to half of the Novellas and all three prequel Novels to this one. I kept hoping that, with all the raving reviews about the Reacher series and the diamond bones I see, that the story "Killing Floor" would show true polish and finesse. I am sadly disapointed to say it does not.
In short. I shall be happy to discover a book I wish to read has an audio version that is narrated by Dick Hill; however, I am done with Lee Child. The are many books out there that have been written by Excellent and even Phenomenal authors. Lee Child is a better than average author but is still only at the rank of Good.

Dick Hill is quite good Lee Child is okay.

That’s it. I’m hooked! I was a new Jack Reacher fan with the movies that have been adapted from Lee Child’s works. The Books seem far better than the movies and really capture the spirit of Reacher. I will be purchasing the entire Jack Reacher series over time. Child’s characters are unique and believable and the story line was very entertaining. I cannot wait to get to the books that the movie adaptions have been based on. I hope that they stay true to Child’s writing style.

That’s it. I’m hooked!

I guess I am not used to the voice...it was a bit slow.

As per other reviews I found the reading a bit slow and hard to reconcile the narrator's voice/pace with the personal of the main character. But that was pretty much resolved by listening to it at 1.25 speed and it made the rest enjoyable.

Better at 1.25 speed

Probably the best book I’ve ever listened to. Had a hard time turning it off for any period of time.

The story was enjoyable and what I expected knowing what I know about the Jack Reacher series. But, I think the narrator is poorly cast. His voice is simply too mature sounding to be mid-thirties Jack Reacher. And, because his voice is so full and gravelly, all the female characters sound like Dustin Hoffman as Tootsie. Really takes you out of the story and makes the romantic scenes cringeworthy.

Love Jack Reacher Don't Like Narration
