Publicada en 1922 y dedicada a su esposo, John Middleton Murry, esta obra presenta algunos de los cuentos más representativos de Mansfield, revelando su técnica única para iluminar los rincones más íntimos de la vida interior, un estilo que elogió la mismísima Virginia Woolf.

Katherine Mansfield (1888, Nueva Zelanda-1923, Francia) era el pseudónimo de Kathleen Beauchamp, una escritora y articulista neozelandesa.
Llegó a ser reconocida por autores contemporáneos de la talla de Virginia Woolf, con la que compartía una mutua y enriquecedora rivalidad, y la cual llegaría a confesar que el único estilo literario que había envidiado en su vida era el de Katherine Mansfield.
Se la considera adscrita al movimiento modernista. Cultivó sobre todo el relato corto, con historias que abordaban la vida cotidiana y la idiosincrasia de la clase media, siempre acompañadas de una velada reflexión existencialista.
Quiso dedicarse a la música y, a pesar de su destreza con el violonchelo, sus padres nunca le permitieron ejercer profesionalmente. Se lanzó a la vida bohemia y tuvo numerosos amantes, pero hubo dos constantes en su vida: el editor John Middlenton Murray, con el que contrajo matrimonio, y la escritora Ida Barker, el amor de su vida. Vivió intensamente hasta que sucumbió a los treinta y cinco años por culpa de la tuberculosis.
Su mayor ambición fue alcanzar la excelencia literaria y su obra, aunque breve, es considerada una pieza imprescindible de la literatura anglosajona.
