About this listen

‘You and I are going to have a chat. If you hang up, this girl dies.’

Adam Turner works the mid-dawn shift at his local radio station. From 12am to 6am, it’s his job to fill the airtime with old songs, inane chatter, and the occasional talkback caller. It’s a long way from his prime-time slot from over a decade ago, when he was a star in the making. Now there’s no producers, no billboards, no stakes, and, crucially, not many listeners. His frequent callers are drunk college students headed home from a night out, or long-range truck drivers. He is completely alone in the studio from midnight until dawn every night.

And then one night at 12:45am, he gets a different kind of call, with higher stakes than he could ever have wanted. The caller’s rules are simple – stay on the line, live on air, until dawn, or the woman they are holding captive will die.

The night wears on and Adam is tormented by his caller, forced to answer increasingly personal questions, exposing his fall from grace for all to hear. He must try to figure out just who is calling him, what they really want, and how he can stop them. All while staying live on air, and keeping the psycho talking.

But as the conversation gets deeper, is Adam willing to broadcast his darkest secrets to the world in order to keep a stranger safe?

Good story, so-so performance style

I liked the plot to this story, but I don't feel like it lived up to my expectations. I think the style of the performance inhibited my listening and enjoying this book. While it probably seemed like a great idea to have the antagonist sound like he's really on a telephone, it was extremely annoying to listen to. Tinny and static sound was realistic, but it felt very distracting to me. Like being blasted with a loud voice suddenly. Again, maybe it was just me, but it really ruined my enjoyment of the story.

This was ok. Good production. Cool story. Weirdly unsatisfactory. Good; not bad, but not… great

I quite like this author and his other books - notably the two about a writer and the two about a podcaster - are both really good series, maybe some of the best in terms of golden age style mystery novels. This is.. not a golden age style mystery novel. It’s like half a story, maybe a novella, and it’s not bad but it doesn’t follow the rules exactly. You never get a chance of figuring it out. In the end the “bad guy” maybe isn’t that bad, who knows. It’s ok. I liked this. I just don’t think it’s anywhere as good as some of this authors other work.
Kinda disappointing. I

suspenseful

I'm so glad I found this author. Each story is different, and each one has a wicked twist. Radio DJ, with a chip on his shoulder from a demotion in time slot, receives a call. The caller advises him not to hang up or the woman he has taken captive dies. As the night proceeds and the confessions mount up. Will he be able to figure this out
So intense and wonderfully narrated.

Pleasantly Surprised

I like the detail that went into this audiobook.
Storyline was gripping, didn’t want to stop hearing. First time “reading” anything from this author. Surprise ending.

Entertaining story and excellent performance!

I love the novellas and this one didn’t disappoint. The performances were fantastic, and the story was suspenseful and had some twists and a surprise ending (well, surprise to me). Nice quick listen while I cleaned the house. I definitely recommend!

Had me on the edge of my seat!

This has great suspense, creative storyline that kept me guessing and just enough clues to figure out “who done it” at the last minute so it wasn’t obvious all along, but was believable.
