About this listen

The postal service frowns upon shipping severed heads. But a courier will deliver anything for a tip....

My name is John Cook, and my life began the day my heart stopped beating. After 500 years, I’ve finally avenged my parents and killed the right bastard who done me wrong. Commander Godwin is dead!

Except revenge has consequences - in my case, both Heavenly and Hellish debt collectors. And these guys are extremely dedicated to their jobs, vying for employee of the month status by being the first to acquire my head. Speaking of heads, one was just delivered to me by a secret admirer. Great. Super. At least things can’t get any worse....

Wait. My best friend, Depweg the werewolf, was just kidnapped. It seems I have another secret admirer. Or is it the same person, trying super-duper hard to win my heart?

Or...maybe take my heart.

Looks like I’ve got a sleepover to plan. For one of us, it will probably be a permanent dirt nap....

Madcap story with heart, soul, and the creepies!

There is no rest for John Cook! And thank Heavens for that! Favorite characters return and you see them grow and change all while running to fight a variety of enemies, and even themselves.,

My only critique is that there seems to be a lot more use of the ef--word than the other book.
Luke Daniels is, however one of the
best narrator s. around,

Crazy continuation of an awesome series

If you even remotely LIKED the first book, you have to get this one! I would say the writer improved on his style making this book at least 20-25% better than book 1. The story is bigger with insane consequences on the line. There is also much desired back stories on some of our favorite characters.
Luke Daniels also gave one of his absolute best performances to date. I burst out laughing from his comedic timing at least 10 times.
Can't wait for the rest!

Fangtastic!

Impeccably great addition to the series! The character development is amazing! I have found myself with 2 new favorite characters, Richard and Gabriel due to their medical ideology lol

Hilarity and heart

“Can I ask a question?”
“You just did.”
“Can I ask another question?”
“Do I really need to point out the irony here?”

If book 1 was John’s origin story, here’s where his band begins to assemble. We start to get backstories for friends like Depweg and gather new teammates, like the werewolf twins I like to call Dazed and Confused. We also find out there’s a bigger picture than just John, the last vampire and couching surfing oaf.

Pop culture pops, fantasy cliches clash, and juvenile humor permeates like stinky cheese. Ball jokes, potty humor, pot scenes. Yep, definitely a series for the immature. Also, still clunky and obvious with some of the plot twists.

And yet, there’s also a surprising depth. Unlike so many urban fantasies out there, John kills innocents, and makes irrational choices and stupid mistakes. Then, he must deal with the consequences. I came to this series for the popcorn fun and thru-the-nose humor, but stayed for its heart.

From here, the books get bogged down in angels, devils, heaven, and hell plot points. It gets tangled in religious prophecies, time trips, other dimensions, and ever increasing powers on both sides. Meanwhile, for all the magical breadth, there is zero diversity depth. White male vampire, white male werewolves, white male warlocks, white male angels. And the only female regular is Lily, the manipulative love interest. The next couple of books are decent enough, even if the camp and the pop-culture fade and this ends up as just another urban fantasy series featuring a single, white male. The series arc has a logical stopping point at book 6, and I’m not sure I’ll continue on, even on sale.

story is entertaining, funny and outstanding narrat

Luke Daniels is definitely in the top 5 of my favorite narrators. so far I'm getting into the series and just bought the next. if there is any flaws Luke's performance smooths them out. my only beef is the acceptance of the body less ^$% spoiler so read it.

Pop culture Easter eggs!

loved it! came for the deadpool comedy & Dresden snark, stayed for the story. Very good narration. I started book one a week ago and I'm almost finished with book four of seven now. 9/10 would recommend.

Another winner

Luke Daniels is one of my favorite narrators. Combined with Hunter Blain’s story, I was laughing a whole lot.

Then I got to the end. And no spoilers- kept listening. With tears of laughter streaming down my eyes. Thank you, Mr. Daniels.

John ALMOST Triggers Hell

Ok, so.. if whether you’re a mild Johniac(?) like me, or you’re like book 7 or so deep into the series, then you know that Johnathan Cook, or rather John isn’t your goody goody superhero or even hero in the same vein of Cap America or even your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man. No, John is THANKFULLY like a certain amount of anti-hero’s like Venom or maybe even playboy billionaire Tony Stark. John never asked to be thrust into situations like the ones he has been thrust into, but Lilith damn it, he is & surprisingly makes the right choices. Read on if ur appetite has been whetted or your curiosity peaked.
