About this listen
The next book in the Masters & Mages series that started with Cold Iron, from the master of fantasy Miles Cameron.
Only fools think war is simple or glorious.
On the magic-drenched battlefield, information is the lifeblood of victory, and Aranthur is about to discover that carrying messages, scouting the enemy, keeping his nerve, and passing on orders is more dangerous, and more essential, then an inexperienced soldier could imagine...especially when everything starts to go wrong.

Story
A vibrant and powerful epic set against an alternate Bronze Age, this tale of gods, men and monsters, conspiracy and war, is a rich, compelling and original tale from a master of the historical and fantasy genres. The people caught up in toils of the gods are merely trying to survive. Victims of vicious whims, trapped by their circumstances or pushed beyond what the mortal frame can bear, a handful of god-touched mortals—a scribe, a warlord, a dancer and a child - are about to be brought together in a conspiracy of their own.

With their vast cargo holds and a crew that could fill a city, the Greatships are the lifeblood of human-occupied space, transporting an unimaginable volume - and value - of goods from City, the greatest human orbital, all the way to Tradepoint at the other, to trade for xenoglas with an unknowable alien species. It has always been Marca Nbaro's dream to achieve the near-impossible: escape her upbringing and venture into space.

The Catenan Republic—the Hierarchy—may rule the world now, but they do not know everything. I tell them my name is Vis Telimus. I tell them I was orphaned after a tragic accident three years ago, and that good fortune alone has led to my acceptance into their most prestigious school. I tell them that once I graduate, I will gladly join the rest of civilized society in allowing my strength, my drive, and my focus—what they call Will—to be leeched away and added to the power of those above me, as millions already do. As all must eventually do.

Lacking health insurance and diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2011, Shawn quickly accrued a massive medical debt that he did not have the ability to pay. That’s when New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks offered to donate a short story that Shawn could sell to help alleviate those bills—and suggested he ask the same of his other writer friends. Unfettered is the result: An anthology built in order to relieve that debt, featuring short stories by some of the best fantasy writers in the genre.

Interesting story that moves at the right pace.
The story line changes and grows in Dept at a pace which feels right and the characters grow and develop naturally. I feel like I know the characters and I find I am concerned about the future they face.

Excellent Adventure with Great Depth & Thoughtful Insight
Cameron crafts an excellent, fast-paced, coming of age adventure that explores both the beautiful and beautiful the not so beautiful facets of human emotion and morality. He does an excellent job of portraying the characters’ internal struggle with those same emotions and morals. Overall, an excellent read and definitely one not to miss.
Also, Cameron continues to show his mastery of historical medieval-era armament, which I particularly enjoy. Well done!

The rare sequel that surpasses the original
A problem i have with a lot of series is that it's so hard to top a coming of age origin story. The sequels can seem sluggish and anticlimactic in comparison. Cameron not only manages to keep a strong (and relentless!) feeling of progress, but also keeps consistent pacing that gives you the occasional breather. As always, incredible action sequences that make you feel like you're the one swinging the sword. And another top-tier performance from Mark Meadows!

A solid second book in the trilogy
I was browsing Audible and saw that the second book in the Masters and Mages series had come out. I added it to my queue and started to relisten to the first book (in the background so I could refamiliarize myself with the setting) and quickly finished it. This book starts out right where the other one left off and doesn't really have too many "down time" sections.
Our primary antagonist continues on his path of discovery and growth set against the backdrop of a war. Exciting action and a more in-depth look at the magic of the world awaits.
A solid second book in the trilogy that still moves the story forward and sets up some good plot points for the third book.
Very good narration as usual.
My only complaint is that I wish publishers (along with the authors) would provide a one-page name guide for those that only get the Audible book - a couple of the names are close and can get confusing about 3/4 of the way through.

Another exciting chapter in an epic fantasy!
Miles/Christian Cameron is one of my favorite authors and this book just reinforces that. I loved this book from start to finish. Great performance by the narrator also. Cameron does two things better than anyone else; write great combat scenes that are believable and based on history and experience and discuss the ethics of violence and nonviolence in real ways while keeping the story moving. do yourself a favor make this your next listen!
