About this listen

A British chick lit romantic comedy novel.

This book is part of the Parker Sisters British chick lit series, but can be heard as a standalone (no cliffhanger).

Expect little, forgive much?

After a whirlwind courtship, Brittany Beresford married her Prince Charming and looked forward to living happily ever after. Five years later, she's been reduced to a not-quite-desperate housewife, with a husband who spends more time flossing his teeth than holding meaningful conversations with her.

She braves his disapproval and turns working mother and, other than feeling far more drawn to a handsome baker she works with than him, things seem to be looking up. But then she discovers that his "hobbies" include something even worse than golf - and he expects her to put up and shut up.

Fairy tale illusions shattered, but still believing marriage is for life and wanting the best for her son, Brittany has a choice to make: should she follow her heart or her conscience?

Sweet

This story is all about the h growing up and becoming a mature woman. She was married young to her Prince who turned out to have quite a few warts. All the family and inlaws around her, except her sister, have her gaslighted and believing she should put up with her unhappiness. Her friends really come through for her and encourage her to pursue her own dreams. There is a budding romance in this story but the story itself is more about the h finding who she really is.

Funny Brit Rom Com

Favorite lines:
*Our new house was gorgeous, huge and detached. It might qualify as property porn.
*Is it possible to be a married single parent?
*I think my husband may have married me and had our son to fill the frame on his desk. Surely, hiring actors would have been cheaper.
*She once made a sponge cake that actually bounced.
*Girl: I am not pregnant. I peed on a stick and nothing happened. Friend: What kind? Girl: Oak ? Birch maybe?

A funny story about a perfect married couple..oh...not so perfect.....

Toxic family values & friends that help you defeat them

It was hard to listen to her acceptance of being a doormat and so much stick-her-head-in-the-sand denial but all in all, it was a good story with a positive ending. Great narration.

self-discovery or self sabotage

Brittany Beresford was a young wife and new mother. She was not happy just sitting at home all day doing nothing. She decided that she wanted to work outside the home, even if only for a few hours. She went for a walk one day and came back home with a job. She had a husband, a son, and a nanny. A husband that did not show her any real affection. A son that she was having a bit of trouble connecting with. A nanny that tuned into a friend. Lots happened here for Brittany but most of all it was her getting to know herself and who she was that was the biggest take away from it. She could be more, do more, show her dad and her husband that she was more than just a pretty face and baby producer. She could do this herself. She finds a passion that was not her marriage.

I did enjoy the story. I liked meeting both new to me author, Jennifer Gilby Roberts, and narrator, Helen Taylor. I also enjoy stepping across the pond to witness a little of life there. I did not like the very noticeable pausing at the end of each chapter or the announcing the end of the chapter.
