About this listen

Award-winning author Nevada Barr fills the pages of Blind Descent with heart-stopping suspense, plots that twist around every corner, and spectacular wilderness settings.

When park ranger Anna Pigeon embarks on a thrilling subterranean rescue mission, she confronts personal demons and a multitude of life-threatening dangers, not all of them from the hostile terrain. A fellow ranger is injured in a suspicious accident while exploring the mostly unmapped Lechuguilla Cavern in New Mexico's Carlsbad Caverns. During a fleeting moment of consciousness, the victim calls for Anna. Battling her paralyzing fear of small spaces, Anna descends into the lifeless underworld to uncover what really happened. As Anna wriggles through cramped tunnels and climbs rocky precipices, she discovers treachery and destruction lurking in the inky black just beyond her headlamp. Veteran narrator Barbara Rosenblat provides the perfect voice for the courageous, but very human, park ranger and her colleagues.

Critic reviews

"Thoroughly satisfying, thanks to the writing and plotting talents of a master." (Publishers Weekly)
"Barr brings the intricate, fascinating, and deadly underground world of spelunking into close and intimate focus using Anna's divergent emotions of awe and near terror as she works her way through the total blackness. Readers are immersed in the setting, and Anna's claustrophobia, tangibly intense at times, keeps the tension of the plot tautly controlled." (School Library Journal)
"Barr's gripping prose never loses its hold: we feel Anna's fear acutely, and the tension of the rescue is palpable." (Booklist)

Blind Descent

Enjoy Nevada Barr's books but this one was not as engaging and slow at times.

Bit too much crawling through claustrophobia inducing caves

Almost like being there, yet not at all pleasant to be in unstable underground caves. Well written and suspenseful.

Mouth Noises

I like the Anna Pigeon series but this is a slow one. The narrator is good but I can’t get past the mouth noises…I physically cringe. With technology can they not silence that? Ha!

Unforgettable adventure

This book is one of the best if not the best in the sequel, so far. It is very realistic and detailed on caving and rock climbing experience. That makes it not only unputdownable read but absolutely irresistible to anyone who is into this spots or even just tried it. The characters also continue to grow and develop personally. It is funny and sharp as always, and better narrated this time. All thumbs up - just not if you are holding a rope!

Entertaining Twists and Turns

The Anna Pigeon series are fun and engaging books and I really like Rosenblatt’s performance. That Anna can really get herself in some trouble and it’s very entertaining to see how she gets herself out.

Blind Descent

I just love Anna Pidgeon!! She sure can get herself into a mess for a friend. And this time, she does it underground. Although it was a little slow in places & full of spelunking jargon, I just couldn't turn it off! And as usual, the conclusion came out of left field. A good listen, especially with a narrator like Barbara Rosenblat!!
