About this listen

Being immortal doesn’t mean you can’t die. It just means you’re damn hard to kill.

When Alexei Medvedev joined the Forgotten Brotherhood - paranormals hired to assassinate other paranormals - he knew it wouldn’t be a cake walk. But his next target is one of Death’s own reapers gone rogue. For the first time since he started this gig, “damn hard to kill” feels more like “damn near impossible”.

Tracking Cassie Dobbs brings him to a remote bar in small-town Alaska, where this hot-as-hell reaper is casually serving drinks, as if she doesn’t have a bounty on her head from Death himself. Alexei is dangerously intrigued. Everyone in the brotherhood knows the first rule: Don’t fall for your target.

But Alexei soon has bigger problems to face than an unexpected attraction. They only send assassins after those who deserve to die…or so he’s been made to believe. Now that he’s met Cassie, though, he’s not so sure.

What if everything he’s been told is a lie, and the person he’s been sent to kill is the only one who knows the truth?

Different and I liked it!

I enjoyed this one! The line of characters are completely different from the last book. I wasn’t sure I would like a vampire shifter but Aleksi grew on me. The one I was most interested in was Cassie-I really have not read too many books about an reaper so her life drew me in. Turns out she wants out of the family business and is hiding up in Alaska. I loved learning all about her job. Once a contract is out out on her and someone from the Forgotten Brotherhood is looking into picking it up.

This one captured my curious nature (just like Aleksi’s) and kept my attention til the end. I easily started out liking Cassie but Aleksi stepped up and wormed his way Into my heart.

I did listen to this on audio. Joe Hempel is the narrator. In here Aleksi is Russian..I wish he would have used an accent when thinking or speaking for him. He did a good job and used a gruffer voice for Aleksi but I would have loved it better.

Danger, swoons and redemption

I loved, loved Alexei and Cassie’s fated mates romantic suspense tale. It was filled with all the emotions, the connections and the love. Alexei and Cassie are both a little rough around the edges. A little wounded. I have a soft spot for the people who are a bit uncomfortable in their skin because they don’t feel like they fit in or are worthy, like Alexei and Cassie. So I love when they finally see their truth and they get swoon worthy HEAs. Alexei Is a hybrid vampire polar bear shifter. He is also a member of the Forgotten Brotherhood, a band of uber powerful paranormal assassins who kill the worst of other paranormal entities. He is researching a contract to kill Cassie. Cassie is an immortal grim reaper who walked away from her “job” a year ago to live as a human. She’s been dreading being found. Once they meet the attraction and connection is undeniable but things are complicated. The story was well written and included witty dialogue, three dimensional characters who grow, and an engaging storyline as shown in sweet moments, steamy scenes, fighting, dangerous situations, paranormal creatures, evil masterminds, henchmen, loyal friends, tragic back stories, mystical coincidences, snark, and laughs.

Joe Hempel did a phenomenal job narrating the story and characters into life with enough change of inflection, tone and cadence to voice multiple characters quite convincingly. I really love the added dimension listening brings to a story.
