Publisher's summary

Emma Luchessi may be a witch from Long Island but she is used to her life being quiet. Some may even say boring. Boring is safe. Like beige. One doesn't get into trouble with beige. But a wrong turn off a southern highway is about to turn Emma's beige life into everything but boring.

Kyle Treharne's a good ol' boy with a sheriff's badge and a difficult population to manage. He wishes he had to worry about gangs and drugs and car-jackings. Instead, he has to worry about big cats fighting with wolves, bears fighting over honey, and hyenas fighting with everyone. And now, out of nowhere, he's got a human outsider riling up all the locals by asking too many questions. She's just so paranoid. And doesn't trust Kyle a lick.

Of course, Kyle is a big cat. He knows how to relax and he'd be more than willing to help Emma learn how. He'd be willing to help Emma do all sorts of things if she'd just give him half a chance.

But it turns out Emma coming to Smithville isn't a simple accident. She's been brought here and she's bringing change and danger right along with her. Lucky for Emma, Kyle and the rest of the town like a bit of danger . . .

Contains mature themes.

Adorable story!

I enjoyed this story very much. I'm off to Amazon to see if there is a series about this shifter town and witch coven. I'm definitely hoping for more!

Great Story Awful Narration

If you like Shelly Laurenston's normal style of humor, you will enjoy the book. I wish it was a bit longer but I always do with her stuff. However the narrator just isn't right for this book. I don't expect authors to exclusively work with one narrator but Charlotte Kane does such a good job and this is really bad in comparison. Plus, it sounds like she should be narrating a meditation track and not a snarky romance novel set in another southern Smith town.

Disappointed

I absolutely love everything by this author and this one left me wanting. The narrator is not a good fit for the story. The story itself felt incomplete, as if there should have been a book before this one.

Good story but felt short

Love author and shifter books, not really care for witches, however, I felt like this was a fun storyline, just wished there was more or at least another book to continue with the many characters (maybe there are in ebooks?)good narration by Ms. Willingham.

2007 reprint

The story was solid, especially if you're a fan of this author. However, as is too often the case, this is a 2007 copyright with no mention that you may have enjoyed this story before. The narrator did not understand this author's humor, so listening to the story made the humor fall a bit flat.

Felt short

Not really a fan of the narrator. Her timing is... off somehow. Story was good. It feels like this book is setting up another book for success. But this one felt really short.

Nice short story

Nice glimpse back into the Smith world. Some dialogue humor. A little bit of mystery and action as well. The narrator did a nice job with providing unique voices and appropriate tone inflections for each scene.

Paranormally Down South

Great character development melding the wild animal instinct with the human personalities. Laurenston is a master storyteller and this is a short but entertaining book. Humor and spice are included. The narrator was decent, but I would have preferred a little more vocal
variety to bring the book to life.

Entertaining as always

Although it was a bit shorter than I would have liked, it was a good story. Her characters always come to life. Was hoping for a more climatic scene of good vs evil, but this may be the set up for another set of books.

Over all entertaining

Hate the narrator

Narrator: Like the title says this book was painful to listen to because of the narrator. Reader has a wispy weak voice, it’s difficult to tell when a different character is speaking because her almost monotone and flat voice. Barely any difference in female to male characters. Charlotte Kane did a fantastic job in the other books. She at least tied to read with a drawl in her voice, her characters had a life of their own and you could tell when a conversation was being had between 2 people.
Story: while short I enjoyed this story when I first read it years ago along with it’s follow up The wolf, the witch and her lack of wardrobe in the belong to the night anthology. I would love to hear more of shifters and especially the Smiths in other parts of the world and their interactions in other shifter towns. Unfortunately the author gave us strange honey badger books that completely counteract her lore in past books.
Side note: the narration in those honey badger books is horrendous. Long established characters are given insulting and borderline racist accents. I listened to the first one and stopped about half way through. It’s one the very few audiobooks I’ve ever returned.
