Story
We know of psychopaths from chilling headlines and stories in the news and movies - from Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy to Hannibal Lecter and Dexter Morgan. As Dr. Kent Kiehl shows, psychopaths can be identified by a checklist of symptoms that includes pathological lying; lack of empathy, guilt, and remorse; grandiose sense of self-worth; manipulation; and failure to accept one’s actions. But why do psychopaths behave the way they do? Is it the result of their environment - how they were raised - or is there a genetic component to their lack of conscience?

Story
In this engrossing journey into the lives of psychopaths and their infamously crafty behaviors, the renowned psychologist Kevin Dutton reveals that there is a scale of "madness" along which we all sit. Incorporating the latest advances in brain scanning and neuroscience, Dutton demonstrates that the brilliant neurosurgeon who lacks empathy has more in common with a Ted Bundy who kills for pleasure than we may wish to admit, and that a mugger in a dimly lit parking lot may well, in fact, have the same nerveless poise as a titan of industry.

As M. E. Thomas says of her fellow sociopaths, we are your neighbors, co-workers, and quite possibly the people closest to you: lovers, family, friends. Our risk-seeking behavior and general fearlessness are thrilling, our glibness and charm alluring. Our often quick wit and outside-the-box thinking make us appear intelligent - even brilliant. We climb the corporate ladder faster than the rest, and appear to have limitless self-confidence.... Who are we? We are highly successful, non-criminal sociopaths and we comprise 4% of the American population (that's 1 in 25 people!).

So helpful
I could cry. But ice done so much of that lately.
This book has been monumental in helping me realize what is wrong with my husband.
Of course this accurate description of him via this book is very hard to process.
AntiSocial Narcisistic Personality Disorder.
I will be able to start now to not expect any remorse or change of him.
We are separated legally by the state because he attacked me March 13th 2016. He was strangling me after a small argument we had.
Undid get lightheaded. He had a blank, hateful look on his face. I figured my life was going to end in that instance. He did let go.
Anyway this book is AWESOME. I thank the author for this knowledge. It really helps to know what your dealing with. And also helps to know its not my fault my husband doesn't seem to love or care about me.
It is so painful. But I am going to recover and begin to heal.
Perhaps a year or two. But each day will be that much closer.
Thank you.
This book gave me answers. Thank you. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Nice introduction to the topic
Apparently written by an author whose sole aim was to learn as much about this personality disorder as possible and explain it to an audience of non-experts, this book is a concise explanation of the features of ASPD. Read by the author, it could probably benefit from a third party narrator; but get the sense that this choice was deliberate, as author explains the work was an attempt to write a useful introduction on the topic that is more-or-less self contained. It succeeds on this merit. Approach is so successful that it left me wanting to read other works by this author (who writes on topics that range from sports to "how to get out of the friendzone.") I wanted to read these other works, as there is a bit of the Renaissance man in his writing, by virtue of the "I wanted to learn as much about this topic as possible, so I can explain it to an audience that knows little about it" approach. if you want a basic introduction to ASPD, it's solid in this regard.

Quick read
This was well-written, concise, and the reader has a nice voice. Doesn’t give me much hope for the person w anti-social personality disorder, but that wasn’t unexpected.
