Publisher's summary

Lewis Carroll's enduring tale begins with Alice chasing the White Rabbit down a rabbit hole, where she encounters a world of delightfully eccentric characters like the Mad Hatter, the March Hare, the Cheshire Cat, the Mock Turtle, and the Queen of Hearts. Throughout her fantastic journeys, Alice retains her reason, humor, and sense of justice.

Alice has become one of the great characters of imaginative literature, as immortal as Don Quixote, Huckleberry Finn, or Dorothy Gale. Her adventures appeal to adults as well as children because they can be read on many levels: a satire on language, a political allegory, or a parody of Victorian children's literature. Many view the story as a fairy tale about the trials and tribulations of growing up - or down, or all turned around - as seen through the expert eyes of a child.

Critic reviews

"Only Lewis Carroll has shown us the world upside down as a child sees it, and has made us laugh as children laugh." (Virginia Woolf)

Various volumes by speaker rough for headphone listeners

Great book. Great performance by reader. However what works great in the theatre was rough with headphones. His characters all speak in different volumes and some are very, very loud. Then the next character is soft spoken. It was uncomfortable with headphones and impossible to adjust.

A Great Michael York Performance

Michael York did an excellent job with this story. He kept this well known story moving along and his characterizations were entertaining. If you wish to hear a classic this should be considered.

York’s Performance

Michael York’s performance add so much to the story. I’m still holding out hope that someday he’ll do Through The Looking Glass, because he’s ruined all other narrators for me.

I am enchanted!

Our story teller, Michael York, gave this classic tale a 'first time ever heard' sparkle!
A true test of the enchanting tale is the ability to make time fly...which it did!

Hmmm....

While there are elements that I appreciate in this book, overall I think I disliked it a bit more than I liked it. I liked some of Alice's adventures and others I found very off-putting. I believe I read that Lewis Carroll had written this to amuse a child who was hospitalized - I'm not sure if that is true or not. If it is true then it would seem to me that the book is purely meant to be silly and amusing. I do appreciate the use of words and poetry to create a fantastical world. However, many parts of the book venture into absurdity. That's where I think it loses me a bit. While all adventure books have elements of danger in them, this felt over the top to me for a light hearted bit of amusement. Alice's adventures and encounters are so random that the story feels disjointed and without a point.

Nothing like what your use to.

So I've seen the movies both live action and animated. The book is so much different. The movies are like "Wow that was a good film. Colorful, creepy at times, but fun."
The book however is much faster paced, much creepier at times, and a total trip.
