Publisher's summary
Now a musical!
Matilda is a sweet, exceptional young girl, but her parents think she's just a nuisance. She expects school to be different but there she has to face Miss Trunchbull, a menacing, kid-hating headmistress. When Matilda is attacked by the Trunchbull she suddenly discovers she has a remarkable power with which to fight back. It'll take a superhuman genius to give Miss Trunchbull what she deserves and Matilda may be just the one to do it!
Here is Roald Dahl's original novel of a little girl with extraordinary powers. This much-loved story has recently been made into a wonderful new musical, adapted by Dennis Kelly with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin.

Story
The BFG is no ordinary bone-crunching giant. He is far too nice and jumbly. It's lucky for Sophie that he is. Had she been carried off in the middle of the night by the Bloodbottler, or any of the other giants - rather than the BFG - she would have soon become breakfast. When Sophie hears that the giants are flush-bunking off to England to swollomp a few nice little chiddlers, she decides she must stop them once and for all. And the BFG is going to help her!

Story
Where did Roald Dahl get all of his wonderful ideas for stories? From his own life, of course! As full of excitement and the unexpected as his world-famous, best-selling books, Roald Dahl's tales of his own childhood are completely fascinating and fiendishly funny. Did you know that Roald Dahl nearly lost his nose in a car accident? Or that he was once a chocolate candy tester for Cadbury's? Have you heard about his involvement in the Great Mouse Plot of 1924? If not, you don’t yet know all there is to know about Roald Dahl.

Editorial reviews
"Dahl's stories work better in audio than in print.... [Kate Winslet's] Matilda is younger than Broadway's, has less attitude and more adenoid. But at the aggrieved voices of the horrible Wormwoods, or Miss Trunchbull, or several schoolchildren, I laughed aloud." (Gregory Maguire, The New York Times Book Review)
Featured Article: The top 100 fantasy listens of all time
When compiling our list of the best fantasy listening out there, we immediately came up against the age-old question: Is this fantasy or science fiction? The distinction is not as clear as you may think. Dragons, elves, and wizards are definitely fantasy, but what about wizards that also fly space ships? (Looking at you, Star Wars.) For the sake of fantasy purity, the top 100 fantasy listens include the best audio works in all manner of fantasy subgenres.

The small, rural Irish farm has been the pride of them all until Ned's wife, Martha, arrives and begins to undermine generations of hard work and happiness. She resents the deep history of the place and sets about making it her own, shutting out what is left of Ned's family. Addressed in green ink on yellowish parchment with a purple seal, they are swiftly confiscated by his grisly aunt and uncle. Then, on Harry's eleventh birthday, a great beetle-eyed giant of a man called Rubeus Hagrid bursts in with some astonishing news: Harry Potter is a wizard, and he has a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. An incredible adventure is about to begin!

At the age of 22, Jennifer Worth left her comfortable home to move into a convent and become a midwife in postwar London’s East End slums. The colorful characters she met while delivering babies all over London - from the plucky, warm-hearted nuns with whom she lived to the woman with 24 children who couldn't speak English to the prostitutes and dockers of the city’s seedier side - illuminate a fascinating time in history.

Dorothy Hare, the dutiful daughter of a rector in Suffolk, spends her days performing good works and cultivating good thoughts, pricking her arm with a pin when a bad thought arises. She does her best to reconcile her father’s fanciful view of his position in the world with such realities as the butcher’s bill. But even Dorothy’s strength has its limits, and one night, as she works feverishly on costumes for the church-school play, she blacks out. When she comes to, she finds herself on a London street, clad in a sleazy dress and unaware of her identity.

Our new favorite read aloud
Do not delay, get this read-aloud immediately. Of course Roald Dahl’s work is brilliant on its own— but it is even better read by Winslet. This is absolutely fantastic!!! It is riveting, Kate’s reading is absolute brilliance — each character unique and with such fun character choices made! Buy it. You won’t regret it.

Absolute Magic
"Matilda" has been one of my favorites since my mother first put it in my hands at eight years old and this audio performance was absolutely gorgeous. Winslet is an extremely talented vocal performer and all of her characters' voices were realistic, distinctive, and unique. The on,y reason that the story portion was given four stars rather than five is because this is an abridged recording and I would have loved for it to have been full length.

Wonderfully narrated! An excellent parent-child bonding activity!
The first ever audible book experience for me and my 8-year old. It was a smashing hit; a page turner; she didn’t want to put the book down. We listened and finished this over one weekend. Kate Winslet’s narration is the draw; simply superb! For my daughter to prefer listening to the book (with only the cover as visual) over watching her TV programs was quite a feat. It shows the power of written (and heard) words and how captivating Kate Winslet’s excellent portrayal of every single character is.
