About this listen

An Iron Eagle Gym novel

Way'ra Bernard is only 20-years-old when his parents kick him out of the house. He has been brought up to believe being gay is wrong and he is going to go to hell for it. He tried very hard not to be gay but couldn't change the way he felt. Now he's living furtively in a closet on the third floor of the place he's working as a janitor - the Iron Eagle Gym.

Neal McPherson is an unattached Dom in his mid-twenties and a member of the gym. One evening after working out, he notices Way'ra on the stairs and he's immediately attracted and intrigued, so he asks Way'ra out. Unable to come up with a reason to refuse and also interested in Neal, Way'ra accepts.

There are a lot of obstacles to the relationship they attempt to build after their date, not least of which is Way'ra's upbringing and his lingering doubts about the kinky sex Neal enjoys. But with patience and persistence, Neal might convince Way'ra not only to accept himself, but to loosen his inhibitions enough to explore and find a happy ending together.

Heartwarming Story

What did you love best about The Closet Boy?

The slow and caring engagement of the characters created a heightened emotional response.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Both main characters were entirely loveable. Way'ra's expectations for himself are so limited yet he trudges on with hope for the future.

What about Jeff Gelder’s performance did you like?

I previously read this story yet I missed so many things in the reading since I'm a fast reader and this performance brought the characters to life! Excellent performance! This is my first audiobook from this actor and will not be my last.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

My chest was tight with emotion throughout!

Relationship First

Way has been trying so hard to take care of himself. Things have been really hard for him. Neal sort of bumps into the boy's secret. He also feels some thing special. I like the idea that despite the fact that Neal is in the lifestyle what is really important is the building of their relationship.

Maybe a better read than a listen

What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

The narration was terrible. It sounded like Jeff Gelder was reading the newspaper. No inflection. The characters were boring because of this

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

most interesting was the actual story although it needed to be heavily edited.

Would you be willing to try another one of Jeff Gelder’s performances?

No

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Disappointment

Any additional comments?

The idea of the story was great. The execution in writing and the narration wasn't.
