Story
The Pentecostal Readings of Scripture Series is conceived of as a forum in which some of Pentecostalism’s leading biblical scholars may share their readings of Scripture as they emerge in a variety of global contexts. In order to hear these diverse global voices in one accord, authors are not obligated to follow any prescribed pattern or model of reading, allowing interested parties a chance to discern the contours of hermeneutical approaches currently being employed by Pentecostal interpreters. This commentary by a well-respected Bible scholar, teacher, and educational administrator in ...

Story
Often called Paul’s magnum opus, Romans has been pivotal to Christians’ understanding of salvation for generations. It had a profound influence on Augustine and Luther. Calvin saw it as the key to understanding all of Scripture. In this volume, Dr. R.C. Sproul introduces us to Paul’s fullest, grandest, most comprehensive statement of the gospel and explains why it is just as vital for believers today as it has been for believers throughout history. Verse by verse, Dr. Sproul unfolds the vast truths that Paul has clearly and carefully woven throughout this book.

Story
N. T. Wright—widely regarded as the most influential commentator and interpreter of Paul—deftly unpacks this dense and sometimes elusive letter, detailing Paul's arguments and showing how it illuminates the Gospel from the promises to Abraham through the visions of Revelation. Wright takes a deep dive into Romans 8, showing how it illuminates so much else that God reveals in Scripture: God the Father, Christology, and the Spirit; Jesus' Messiahship, cross, resurrection, and ascension; salvation, redemption, and adoption; suffering and glory; holiness and hope.

Story
As we come to the book of Romans, we see that it is one of several epistles written by Paul, the apostle. He wrote approximately two thirds of the New Testament. This letter was written about ten years into Paul’s ministry and about ten years from his death. The foundation of the New Covenant church had mostly been laid by the other apostles; Paul was visiting and writing to various churches to make sure they were walking out what had been taught to them. It is common in Paul’s writings for the first part of a letter to be theological and the last part to be practical, applying the ...

Story
It can be argued that no book of the Bible has had a greater effect on Christianity than the book of Romans. Martin Luther described it as "the most important piece in the New Testament," and wrote; "It is well worth a Christian's while not only to memorize it word for word but also to occupy himself with it daily, as though it were the daily bread of the soul." In this classic commentary by Dr. Warren Wiersbe, you can refresh your own understanding of this seminal work, Paul's masterpiece letter to the church in Rome.

Story
Combining research from Asian scholars with his many years of experience living and working in East Asia, Brad directs our attention to Paul's letter to the Romans. He argues that some traditional East Asian cultural values are closer to those of the first-century biblical world than common Western cultural values. In addition, he adds his voice to the scholarship engaging the values of honor and shame in particular and their influence on biblical interpretation.

Story
On the cover of this book is a picture of the ancient Roman Colosseum that still stands today. In its early years, many Christians were killed in the Colosseum while thousands of Roman citizens watched from the stands. Most likely, some of these Christian martyrs had heard the book of Romans being read to them years before they laid down their lives for Jesus. Paul wrote the book of Romans to help establish them in the faith and to prepare them for the day of their death. He warned them that unless they held fast their confession firm to the end, they would not inherit eternal life. Their ...

Story
Romans chapter 9 has become a dividing point between competing theologies for years. Calvinistic authors ground much of their interpretation of the Bible and understanding of God's nature and character from this particular chapter. Christians that are unaware of the theological traps they can fall into by blindly following Calvin's theological determinism can result in a distorted view of God's nature and character. The consequence of this is surely problematic when applying a predetermined view of God to the rest of the Bible that the Scriptures simply will not support. This has at times ...

Story
What follows is not a translation in the ordinary sense of the word. It’s more like a paraphrase. Rather than worry over the letter of the text, the goal has been to illuminate the large scale patterns that structure it. The King James Version, for instance, renders Paul’s letter with uncanny beauty but is opaque as an argument. Modern translations tend to have the same problem. Their overriding concern is with the letter of the text, not with its logic. As a result, Paul’s forest is always getting sacrificed for the sake of his trees. But Paul’s work is too important, his good news...

The emperor Justinian reunified Rome's fractured empire by defeating the Goths and Vandals. At his capital in Constantinople, he built the world's most beautiful building, married the most powerful empress, and wrote the empire's most enduring legal code, seemingly restoring Rome's fortunes for the next five hundred years. Then, in the summer of 542, he encountered a flea. The ensuing outbreak of bubonic plague killed 5,000 people a day in Constantinople and nearly killed Justinian himself.

Story
Here in a single volume is the entire, unabridged recording of Gibbon's masterpiece. Beginning in the second century A.D. at the apex of the Pax Romana, Gibbon traces the arc of decline and complete destruction through the centuries across Europe and the Mediterranean. It is a thrilling and cautionary tale of splendor and ruin, of faith and hubris, and of civilization and barbarism. Follow along as Christianity overcomes paganism... before itself coming under intense pressure from Islam.
