Publisher's summary

Blessed with great beauty and wealth, Emily Armstrong had the highest privileges that youth can bestow. But all that is behind her now. Pregnant and abandoned by the man she loved, she struggles to survive in the slums of Philadelphia after the Civil War. Vowing never to be fooled by love again, she builds a new life as the mistress of a boardinghouse, known for her morals, virtue, and strictly guarded heart. But when a traveler from out West visits for the Centennial Exhibition and checks into Emily's lodging, something stirs within her. Rugged yet ever the gentleman, this cowboy is nothing like the man who left her pregnant long ago. Perhaps this time, love deserves a second chance....

A sweeping saga that spans three generations, Woman's Own is the story of four Armstrong women - Emily, her two daughters, and her estranged mother - who are seemingly cursed when it comes to love. In a time before women's rights, the Armstrong women challenge expectations and carve out a life of independence and freedom on their own terms. Fans of Virgin River will enjoy this timeless novel of new beginnings, untamable passion, and all-redeeming love.

A great read

Would you consider the audio edition of Woman's Own to be better than the print version?

I did not read the print version.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Emily was my favorite character because she was strong and compassionate, but to self sacrificing. Although I do admired the way she always looked out for her girls first. And she was not afraid of hard work.

Which character – as performed by Amy McFadden – was your favorite?

Patricia was performed so well that I disliked her greatly.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I think all mothers of daughters in their late teens should give this as a seed book to help them on the path to adulthood.

Any additional comments?

I would like to know what happens to Patricia, Emily and Lilly.

What is a Woman's Strength?

This is a beautiful novel.

It is much more than a touching romance story - it is a story about women's place in society and how they view themselves. I loved the viewpoints of the different women portrayed in this story.

Four women of varying strengths from three generations all see their roles in life differently. The most relatable character for me was the younger daughter, Lilly who has modern day fearlessness and independence but is placed in a time in history when this is unacceptable. Lilly's biggest ally, surprisingly, is her powerful Grandmother along with the man who loves her.

The narration was OK and the character portrayal was quite good, but I felt that Amy McFadden could have slowed up a bit. Some parts were so rushed I had to repeat the listen.

Strong women....not a ton of romance

Woman's Own is not like any book I've read so far. I was definitely expecting more romance. This is more of an epic story of three strong women and one that I wanted to slap throughout the book. While there was romance it was definitely secondary to the stories of the three generations of women. When I realized there wasn't going to be a lot of romance I wasn't sure I would enjoy the book. About halfway through I found that I didn't need the romance in the book it was very different and the story was interesting and I was quite caught up in each character's lives.

A Multi Generation Saga

This book is quite different than the Virgin River series. It follows the stories of 3 generations of the women in a family. All are different personalities and set on the courses they choose for themselves. Some love scenes are present. This is an earlier work by Mrs. Carr, but still entertaining.

Good book but a little slow.

All considered it was a good book but has some times where it gets tedious. I like longer books but had some lags.

Ended Abruptly

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, interesting story

What did you like best about this story?

A story about three generations of women

What about Amy McFadden’s performance did you like?

Pretty good narrator

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

No

Any additional comments?

The book ended abruptly for such a long narrative. What happened to Patricia?
I had the feeling the author had issues with the Catholic Church because the only representatives of the church she presented were evil or greedy. When authors use their books to further their personal agendas whether religous or political, it tends to turn me off.
