Publisher's summary
This is the companion book to the online course Why Conflict Models Don’t Work When the Problem Is Bullying.
In this audiobook, author Jennifer Hancock discusses the differences between a conflict model and a bullying elimination model and how we can use elimination models to resolve both conflicts and harassment situations ethically and effectively.
Workplace bullying and harassment situations often masquerade as conflict. But they aren’t. Applying a conflict resolution model to a bullying or harassment situation makes the problem worse.

Story
One basic need all children have, educator Alfie Kohn argues, is to be loved unconditionally, to know that they will be accepted even if they screw up or fall short. Yet conventional approaches to parenting such as punishments (including "time outs"), rewards (including positive reinforcement), and other forms of control teach children that they are loved only when they please us or impress us. Kohn cites a body of powerful and largely unknown research detailing the damage caused by leading children to believe they must earn our approval.

Why is it so hard to change problem behavior - in our kids, our colleagues, and even ourselves? Conventional methods often backfire, creating a downward spiral of resentment and frustration, and a missed opportunity for growth. What if the thinking behind these old methods is wrong? What if people don’t misbehave because they want to, but because they lack the skills to do better? Or as renowned psychologist J. Stuart Ablon asks, what if changing problem behavior is a matter of skill, not will?

When a high-conflict person has one of five common personality disorders - borderline, narcissistic, paranoid, antisocial, or histrionic - they can lash out in risky extremes of emotion and aggression. And once an HCP decides to target you, they're hard to shake. But there are ways to protect yourself. Using empathy-driven conflict management techniques, Bill Eddy, a lawyer and therapist with extensive mediation experience, will teach you to spot warning signs of the five high-conflict personalities in others and in yourself.

It is high time to reinvent leadership thinking. The current work experience is so full of emotional waste that it's seen as a foregone cost in today's business environments. Cy Wakeman teaches straightforward strategies in which this time and energy can be re-commissioned and put toward the value that hired talent is intended to provide.

Many books cover practical business knowledge, but few address the issue of interpersonal skills. The ever-changing circle of power within a corporation may not necessarily follow the same guidelines it publicly professes. The most talented employee isn't always the one promoted; there is an intangible quality the upper echelon look for.

Very Validating
Listened out of curiosity to know whether I had tried to handle a bullying situation correctly as a manager. Indeed I did. Consistency is key. Ignoring inappropriate behavior or allowing it to trigger a conflict management response merely rewards it. It’s interesting how pop psychology has gotten us away from traditional approaches in the workplace and how that has increasingly made certain workplaces toxic and even dangerous. No tolerance for bad behavior is the way to go.

identifies the true root of bullying
Exceptional description on identifying bullying as a pattern of behavior when so many times it can be misidentified as a simple conflict.
Provides a framework on how to extinguish bullying behavior within a workplace. Would love to to hear how this can be applied within a school situation where bullying is quite rampant and doesn't seem to be effectively dealt with.

Great info
I'm being bullied at work, and I just can't afford to quit right now. This book is great for HR, but also helped me to understand why it's not stopping, even after reporting to HR. It doesn't solve my problem, but has given me some ideas on how to proceed. Workplace bullying is not illegal in the US, so the only way to defeat it is to learn about it, and try to mitigate.
