About this listen

Shortlisted for the RNA’s Goldsboro Books Contemporary Romantic Novel Award.

A strange encounter. An unlikely friendship. But will it survive when they both know the truth?

As single mother Leah struggles to get her children ready one morning, the doorbell rings. Standing on the doorstep of their terraced house in Whitley Bay is a well-dressed stranger, Clio, who feels an emotional tie to the house that she can’t explain. The story should end there, but a long-buried secret is already on its way to the surface...

In some ways the two women couldn’t be more different: Leah’s a mother of two and the daughter of a barmaid; Clio’s a perennially single heiress to her baroness mother’s estate. But where Leah lacks grown-up company, Clio lacks any experience of the real world, and the unlikely friendship sparked by their curious first meeting offers both of them a welcome respite from the routine of their lives.

It is a friendship that will answer questions neither of them knew to ask, uncovering secret stories from the past that have stayed hidden for decades. But will it also be the catalyst for them to finally feel that they belong?

Great Story!!!

I really enjoyed listening to this book. I loved how we were listening to just the women's perspectives. And all the women were so likable. The men on the other hand are extremely unlikable. I may have figured out what was going on pretty early, but I still enjoyed hearing the character's journey to the truth. And the last 2.5 hours of listening are absolutely fantastic. Not sure what some of the reviewers were talking about when it comes to not liking the narrator. I thought this narrator was fantastic!! I understood her with zero problems and she changed her voice for each character that you knew exactly who was talking when. Great book!!!

Not recommended for fun relaxed, reading.

Story started out confusing. Too much back and forth in describing lives of characters. it improved a little as I struggled to stay focused. Not recommended for relaxing, enjoyable reading.

Amazing imaginative story! Great narrator!

How she did it I don’t know! I kinda thought He was who He turned out to be but still was way surprised how He did it and for so long. But the wife and daughter are the best. I wish all people and rich people and people who think they are rich people would be thoughtful and caring in real life instead of hateful and spiteful
Thank you

Interesting Story

This was very different. I’ve never read a book that was like it. How a person could so guiltlessly live a double life and identity is beyond comprehension to me! It actually would be fascinating if it wasn’t for the fact how the deception affected the people that he loved. He was his self centered sociopath, which has no conscience. He flouted
around life like it owed him something. The author did a great job in portraying what his children and wives were like. The girls will love me as far as the women he married. Even his obnoxious son came around and softened up to the situation in the end. The last chapter about Charles/Ray at 1st I thought was a bit bizarre. But the more I thought about it the more fitting it was. Well worth the read! And the narration was great also.

Great twists

I am not a huge fan of British readers. But Elizabeth Knoweldon does a great job of bringing the text to life. Her voice can be a bit breathy but I quickly forgave her when the story got intense. A great escapist read.

Story worked everything to good in the end

This is akin to a Hallmark Movie . . . the reader expects a happy ending, all threads tied up in a pretty bow. As long as the reader is aware of that, the story is quite enjoyable.
