Publisher's summary

The shadow of war looms over Elatra.

Rob and Riardin's Rangers have returned triumphant after assisting Dwarven territory and Merfolk territory. They endured the Blight, betrayals, and bombs, barely managing to prevail over the many trials that assailed them. An alliance has been brokered between nations, and for the first time, the Blight seems like it's on the ropes.

Unfortunately, there's never rest for the weary. It isn't long before they hear news of a brewing war between the Harpies and Dragonkin. Confused and concerned, the newly formed allied coalition heads down to find out what's going on—only to become embroiled in a dark conspiracy that threatens to shake Elatra to its core.

As corruption rises in Harpy territory, Rob finds himself surrounded by enemies on all sides. With two leaders, the Blight, and the gods all setting their sights on him, the stakes have never been higher. He has no choice but to fight onward, motivating himself with the knowledge that peace lies at the end of this long, bloody road.

If he can hold onto his sanity, that is.

Story Progression

The series keeps building well and keeping my interest! I can’t wait for the aligning of the storylines but till then, I’m curious what will happen next.

Another great installment

Not much to say except it’s just another great leg of the journey and I’m excited for more.

Fantastic

Overall another stellar installation. Narrator is excellent at characterization and tone, but makes mistakes, such as saying "Hp" when he clearly means "mp, and mispronouncing names, which breaks immersion for me.

Great ending, what an interesting scenario with much to ponder

Another great addition to this gritty adventure. Rob lives extremes with foes/friends, hope/despair, strength/weakness, childish/mature. Fascinating characters and dynamic plot. Maybey favorite in the series. Also Neil is becoming one of my favorite readers.

Stat review

The story was amazing as always. The only negative I have is just how audible chose how to place the stat review parts. You can’t just skip it and move to the next chapter since it is included with chapter. That’s the only negative you’ll see from me. I really get pulled into these stories. And that storytelling done is absolutely amazing for me.

too much self loathing

good addition but way too much repetitiveness about Robs self loathing and doubts. his insecurities at this point are becoming ridiculous as it's been almost a year.

perfectly timed progression

the author found a way to scale the main character thru the entire series while keeping the fear of death and consequences ripe for the entire story. can't wait for the next one!

In a fantasy world, Harpies are nominally peaceful

KamikazePotato continues to move the series forward in interesting ways. not only does he pit the protagonists against another heretofore unchallenged species but they must do this while also having to best the Blight Boss while they're at it. There is a tie-in to Jason and Earth so listening to Book 4.5 will explain any missing context. Book 4.5 is well worth the credit, btw.

There are some points of realism in this book where a few of the protagonist cadre leadership meet their end. There is also more context about how Rob is obtaining unique skills that allow him to survive where even the gods are not pulling the strings.

In all, a good continuation of the series and I look forward to the next book in the series.

Of course, I would be remiss if I neglected to praise Neil Hellegers for his excellent narrating performance.
