About this listen

In addition to strength, steel, and courage, a hero discovers he's in need of a friend, in the first installment of a daring and dangerous fantasy adventure.

When it comes to action and adventure, every hero needs a good sidekick. Holmes has Watson, Batman has Robin, and Daniel has . . . Orrin. More like brothers than friends, they always have each other's backs. And as Daniel is the big, strong, handsome type, Orrin is more than happy to remain in his shadow at school, at parties, pretty much everywhere.

Then things take a turn for the truly weird when a terrible accident catapults the pair into a world totally unlike their own, in which the rules of a role-playing game hold sway. Naturally, Daniel is classified as a "hero," while Orrin is—also naturally—relegated to the fantasy equivalent of "bleh." Nothing new there.

But in this realm populated with lethal foes both inhuman and inescapable, sticking together matters more than ever, and soon Daniel and Orrin will discover more about themselves—and each other—than either one thought possible. In fact, Orrin just might find the confidence and strength to become something other than your average sidekick . . .

The first volume of the hit LitRPG fantasy series—with more than 600,000 views on Royal Road—now available on Kindle, Kindle Unlimited, and Audible!

constant system voice interruptions nearly destroy otherwise entertaining story.

if you can learn to tune out the bad naration choices that many reviews have complained about, it's an enjoyable listen. I struggled for a long time with it and almost returned the book twice. whoever's idea it was to have spells, abilities, and key words always pronounced in the loud "system" voice, needs to be fired, from a cannon.

decent story

The story isn't bad, and I've never been disappointed in a book narrated by nick podehl but the pre recorded spell names almost ruins it. Please authors and narrators STOP doing it.

Narration interruption ruin the story as a whole.

I am all for the stats and information being brought up.
Yet when the dialogue is something like, "You are a HERO!, so you have to be careful"
Just ruins the story by yelling in a scene that doesn't make sense to yell in.
It's like the narrator went through the story realizing they forgot keywords and threw them in with no subtly to the narration already present.
Mind you this is a great story and a good listen, besides the yelling.

Excellent book, Significant Narration Issue

This is an excellent book. Good story, great character development, good pacing. And in general, the narration is really good... with the significant exception of the extremely jarring, incredibly annoying, and completely unnecessary "system voice". I'm not sure who's idea this was, but I came very close to returning this book after the 20th time the word HERO was randomly shouted out in a monotone voice in the middle of an otherwise normal sentence.

Almost perfect

Nick is a great narrator as always, the story was very interesting... BUT omg the cuts away from the narrators voice every time someone mentioned a skill, spell, or class was SO obnoxious and annoying. If the book hadnt been so expensive and the story interesting I probably wouldnt have finished even 1/4 of it let alone the whole book. I wont be buying the next one if it still does that. -.-

Good story, obnoxious way to narrate

The story is good, and I’m excited where it will go. They chose an annoying way to narrate classes and abilities which never stopped being annoying, but lt is what it is I guess

Good but a little stilted

Having every mention of a skill be announced in a rougher forceful force messed with the flow of narration. However the excellent story and interesting use of LitRPG mechanics kept me hooked.

Nick's narration is superb. as always the book is good. the one thing I would like to see them changes the the robotic ability names but other than that no complaints

Good character development

I hope there’s more to come. It’s a good story with the slight twist. The narrator and writer did a fantastic job!!
