About this listen

Based on the true stories of the two US Navy Seals operating behind enemy lines in Vietnam with the super top-secret unit MACV-SOG (Military Assistance Command Vietnam, Special Operations Group)

US Navy Seal Lieutenant Tom Norris, on three separate occasions over a four-day period, with no sleep, went behind enemy lines to rescue two downed air force pilots. Using stealth tactics, he was able to get though or around hundreds of North Vietnamese to rescue one pilot. The second pilot - hungry, thirsty, and having lost 40 pounds - was disoriented and unable to help in his rescue. Norris, with the help of one Vietnamese Seal, was able to safely bring the pilot back inside US lines.

Six months later, US Navy Seal Mike Thornton was on a top-secret mission with Lieutenant Norris behind enemy lines. Chinese junks dropped them off 10 miles north of their target. After swimming to shore, the team conducted a recon mission but was discovered the following morning by North Vietnamese. Fighting their way to the South China Sea, they began swimming out to sea. All were wounded, but Thornton, himself wounded and using a breast stroke, was able to tow or push the whole team out to sea until they were rescued.

This was the first time in the history of the Medal of Honor that one recipient got the medal for rescuing another recipient - and each was able to witness the other's ceremonies.

Audio quality isn’t great bit of an echo in the background.

Should be required reading in High School History class

This was an incredible account of some incredible men. I love the author as narrator, it was like my father or grandfather was sharing his life experiences. I am not a military buff, and had no idea who John Ripley, Thomas Norris, or Mike Thornton were prior to this book. These men went above and beyond, and their names and deeds should never be forgotten. Thank you Mr. McKim for writing and reading this book.

Excellent and Factual.

This covers a lot of what the war was, a war that was not planned by generals but by politicians. Politicians are not trained with warfare tactics, but they succeeded in binding our hands. They bent to demands to a propagandist media and the influence on the young generation. Little did they know that they were being masterfully played so that they could be used to steer the politicians against the efforts of the success of soldiers, sailors, and airmen in Vietnam. Despite people making negative comments about the “author’s political criticism,” these were the facts that bound our hands from ever winning the war. The communists knew that if they could get the US forces out, they could take over - which is exactly what happened because of the media’s unwitting assistance. This made the job of the regular soldier difficult and the special operator even more difficult when they could easily see the enemy, but were forced to only observe and report, and not take action against the enemy that was going to use that equipment to kill their fellow soldiers. So understand what the author (and all brave Vietnam Veterans) went through. If you are a Democrat and or Liberal, this story won’t mean much to you because your ideology conflicts with the truth of the Vietnam War, and that is that the media, much as it does now, misinforms and lies to the population.

The real story behind Bat 21

Outstanding account of frog men of MACV, the heroic deeds they themselves downplay as just doing their duty. Some may point out this or that on maybe narration, not me. The narration had me there and throughly briefed, tracking the mission as if I had been first man behind man on point. I recommend this read

Very Insightful

Great history of Bat-21 and the less know operations for SEALS and Marines in support of MAXV-SOG. My only complaint is the sound quality. While I could understand that narrator/author fine, or the quality was not as crisp as other recordings. Still very interesting. I finished it all on one day.
