About this listen
In the age of The Biggest Loser and the "war on obesity", we’re pressured to conform to certain body standards at any cost. Sure, everyone should eat right and get exercise, but what if you do that and you still don’t fit into the clothes at the mall? In Two Whole Cakes, Fatshionista extraordinaire Lesley Kinzel tells stories, gives advice, and challenges stereotypes about being and feeling fat. Kinzel says no to diet fads and pills, shows by example how to stop hating your body, celebrates self-acceptance at any size, and urges you to finally accept the truth: Your body is not a tragedy!
Lesley Kinzel, who co-founded the blog Fatshionista, is an online celebrity in the communities of size acceptance, fashion, and women’s issues. She has her own blog on body politics in the media, Two Whole Cakes, is an associate editor at xoJane, and has become the go-to fatty for all things fashion and pop culture.

Story
Sixty-eight percent of Americans have dieted at some point in their lives. But upwards of 90 percent of people who intentionally lose weight gain it back within five years. And as many as 66 percent of people who embark on weight-loss efforts end up gaining more weight than they lost. If dieting is so clearly ineffective, why are we so obsessed with it? The culprit is diet culture, a system of beliefs that equates thinness to health and moral virtue, promotes weight loss as a means of attaining higher status, and demonizes certain ways of eating while elevating others.

Jes Baker burst onto the body positivity scene when she created her own ads mocking Abercrombie and Fitch for discriminating against all body types - a move that landed her on the Today show and garnered a loyal following for her raw, honest, and attitude-filled blog missives. Building on the manifesta power of Things, this memoir goes deeply into Jes' inner life, from growing up a fat girl to dating while fat. With material that will have listeners laughing and crying along with Jes' experience, this new book is a natural fit with her irreverent, open-book style.

Burnout. Many women in America have experienced it. What’s expected of women and what it’s really like to be a woman in today’s world are two very different things - and women exhaust themselves trying to close the gap between them. Sisters Emily Nagoski, PhD, and Amelia Nagoski, DMA, are here to help end the cycle of feeling overwhelmed and exhausted. Instead of asking us to ignore the very real obstacles and societal pressures that stand between women and well-being, they explain with compassion and optimism what we’re up against - and teach us how to fight back.

Shrill is an uproarious memoir, a feminist rallying cry in a world that thinks gender politics are tedious and that women, especially feminists, can't be funny. Coming of age in a culture that demands women be as small, quiet, and compliant as possible - like a porcelain dove that will also have sex with you - writer and humorist Lindy West quickly discovered that she was anything but. With inimitable good humor, vulnerability, and boundless charm, Lindy boldly shares how to survive in a world where not all stories are created equal.

Story
Vivek Shraya has reason to be afraid. Throughout her life she's endured acts of cruelty and aggression for being too feminine as a boy and not feminine enough as a girl. In order to survive childhood, she had to learn to convincingly perform masculinity. As an adult, she makes daily compromises to steel herself against everything from verbal attacks to heartbreak. Now, with raw honesty, Shraya delivers an important record of the cumulative damage caused by misogyny, homophobia, and transphobia, releasing trauma from a body that has always refused to assimilate.

The difficulties experienced by adult children of narcissists can manifest themselves in many ways - for example, physical self-loathing that takes the form of overeating, anorexia, or bulimia; a self-destructive streak that causes poor job performance and rocky personal relationships; or a struggle with the self that is perpetuated in the adult's interaction with his or her own children. These dilemmas are both common and correctable, Elan Golomb tells us.

Story
Pink and pretty or predatory and hardened, sexualized girlhood influences our daughters from infancy onward, telling them that how a girl looks matters more than who she is. Somewhere between the exhilarating rise of Girl Power in the 1990s and today, the pursuit of physical perfection has been recast as a source - the source - of female empowerment. And commercialization has spread the message faster and farther, reaching girls at ever-younger ages.

Delivers as promised
I gave this book a 5 star review with no question. I loved the experiences that were shared and could relate to so many of them. I've been the "big girl" all my life. This book made me question some things I do on a daily basis. Body acceptance is the hardest thing to get to but I am working on it every day.

Great book! Not a fan of the narration
It killed me when she kept pronouncing "Michelle" as "Mee-shell." Otherwise her super proper and clear enunciation only partially distracted me. The book was really good and refreshing.

A Book About Being Fat and NOT Dieting
Kinzel tells stories and gives advice on fashion, weight-loss drugs, self-love, eating disorders, how dieting affected her health, and her resulting gallstones.
I could relate to her story of shopping at the mall and feeling judged by other consumers— her experience with a group of humilating high school girls was all too excruciating! Anybody who's ever had a crappy day in the dressing room can relate to Kinzel's manifesto.
Feminist, loud and proud-- and unsparingly witty as well.

Voice doesn't match the author's tone and style
Would you try another book from Lesley Kinzel and/or Heather Henderson?
I'm a fan of Lesley's writing, so I'd read another book by her. Heather Henderson's reading was too earnest and one-note for this material - she didn't convey Lesley's humor or sarcasm or her sense of absurdity and outrage, and the book was boring to listen to.
What did you like best about this story?
It's honest and incisive.
Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Heather Henderson?
A woman with a more "edgy" voice to convey the author's sarcasm and indignation and sense of absurdity -- someone like Sarah Vowell.

Fabulous!!
This was a wonderful book I happened upon. The author has a great perspective to write the book from and she does it well. She is funny and holds nothing back which only adds more to the quality of the book. My life is better for having listened to this great writing.
