About this listen
"Who knew that Raiders of the Lost Ark was based on real events? This audiobook, expertly performed by Stephanie Willis, is a must for anyone who enjoyed the Harrison Ford movie and wants to know what really happened in 1908, when a British expedition searched for the Ark of the Covenant, alleged to have "mystical" powers." –AudioFile Magazine, Earphones Award Review
True Raiders is The Lost City of Z meets The Da Vinci Code, from critically acclaimed author Brad Ricca.
This audiobook tells the untold true story of Monty Parker, a British rogue nobleman who, after being dared to do so by Ava Astor, the so-called “most beautiful woman in the world,” headed a secret 1909 expedition to find the fabled Ark of the Covenant. Like a real-life version of Raiders of the Lost Ark, this incredible story of adventure and mystery has almost been completely forgotten today.
In 1908, Monty is approached by a strange Finnish scholar named Valter Juvelius who claims to have discovered a secret code in the Bible that reveals the location of the Ark. Monty assembles a ragtag group of blueblood adventurers, a renowned psychic, and a Franciscan father, to engage in a secret excavation just outside the city walls of Jerusalem.
Using recently uncovered records from the original expedition and several newly translated sources, True Raiders is the first retelling of this group’s adventures—in the space between fact and faith, science and romance.

Mrs. Grace Humiston was an amazing lawyer and a traveling detective during a time when no women were practicing those professions. She focused on solving cases no one else wanted and advocating for innocents. One of her greatest accomplishments was solving the cold case of a missing 18-year-old girl, Ruth Cruger. Her work changed how the country viewed the problem of missing girls, but it came with a price: she learned all too well what happens when one woman upstages the entire NYPD.

The Roman Republic was one of the most remarkable achievements in the history of civilization. After its founding in 509 BCE, the Romans refused to allow a single leader to seize control of the state and grab absolute power. The Roman commitment to cooperative government and peaceful transfers of power was unmatched in the history of the ancient world. But by the year 133 BCE, the republican system was unable to cope with the vast empire Rome now ruled.

In February 1959, a group of nine experienced hikers in the Russian Ural Mountains died mysteriously on an elevation known as Dead Mountain. Eerie aspects of the incident—unexplained violent injuries, signs that they cut open and fled the tent without proper clothing or shoes, a strange final photograph taken by one of the hikers, and elevated levels of radiation found on some of their clothes—have led to decades of speculation over what really happened.

A real-life thriller in the vein of The Devil in the White City, Kate Winkler Dawson's debut, Death in the Air, is a gripping, historical narrative of a serial killer, an environmental disaster, and an iconic city struggling to regain its footing. In winter 1952, London automobiles and thousands of coal-burning hearths belched particulate matter into the air. But the smog that descended on December fifth of 1952 was different; it was a type that held the city hostage for five long days.

One of Soseki's most beloved works of fiction, the novel depicts the 23-year-old Sanshiro leaving the sleepy countryside for the first time in his life to experience the constantly moving 'real world' of Tokyo, its women and university. In the subtle tension between our appreciation of Soseki's lively humour and our awareness of Sanshiro's doomed innocence, the novel comes to life. Sanshiro is also penetrating social and cultural commentary.

Story
In The First Man, Albert Camus tells the story of Jacques Cormery, a boy who lived a life much like his own. Camus summons up the sights, sounds, and textures of a childhood circumscribed by poverty and a father's death yet redeemed by the austere beauty of Algeria and the boy's attachment to his nearly deaf-mute mother. The result is a moving journey through the lost landscape of youth that also discloses the wellsprings of Camus's aesthetic powers and moral vision.

Story
You define life or it defines you. In Shawn Speakman’s case, it was both. Lacking health insurance and diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2011, Shawn quickly accrued a massive medical debt that he did not have the ability to pay. That’s when New York Times best-selling author Terry Brooks offered to donate a short story that Shawn could sell to help alleviate those bills—and suggested he ask the same of his other writer friends. Unfettered is the result: An anthology built in order to relieve that debt, featuring short stories by some of the best fantasy writers in the genre.

Disappointing and disjointed
I thought this might be a tale of adventure and daring, and there was a touch of both, but I was disappointed in the writing and narration. First, the female narrator tried to dramatize some of the action in an almost singsong way, more like one would expect a Sunday School teacher to do in telling a Bible story (and yes, I know some of this book is a retelling of several Bible stories). When the narrator just read the book without the drama, especially in some of the later summary or wrap-up chapters, it was a pleasant experience.
But, second, the book seemed at times that it was a mishmash of two or even three books interspersed in different order and out of sequence. Yes, flashbacks and recounting multiple plots/stories can be useful or even entertaining, but not in this book. It became tedious in the first half of the book (to the point that I stopped listening for a couple of days) and I had to approach the book more as a series of disconnected short stories before I could finish.
There are several reviews of this book that are glowing and complimentary, but I don’t think this work is going to please the general reader due to its length and the haphazard nature of its writing.

Interesting book
Overall the book was very interesting. At some points it veered off on tangents and stories that didn’t see useful to the plot lines. I’m mixed on the performer. Her narration voice was pleasant and kept my attention; but her character voices were very irritating to me. That said, worth checking out if you are a history enthusiast.

Awful
Repetitive and tedious. Meandering with no sense of mystery or excitement. I literally could not stay awake.
