About this listen

To Hell and Back Again: An Insight Into Addiction is a collection of journal entries that were written by Leona Mae Peters during her six month stay at a drug rehabilitation facility in Orlando, Florida.

These entries detail her early years, her coming of age, and the abuse she suffered at the hands of many before her issues with addiction began. She describes her on-again off-again relationship with drugs and alcohol, and discusses her hopes and dreams for the future once making it through her rehabilitation.

Diary entries from a hard life

A story in the words of a diary written by a woman in bad situations all her life. It’s like all diaries in the sense that a person only writes the highs or lows in their lives in relatively short paragraphs or two and this woman has had more than her fair share. It really doesn’t explain experiences of being an addict, just an an entry saying she started drinking and went to rehab. It is not an insightful book for anyone looking to gain insight of problems of addiction or abusive partners.
The good part of this is the last part of the book which is the author’s notes, explaining that the diary is his mother’s. And how that when he was growing up he wasn’t aware of what his mom was going through. That’s kudos to his mom to keep him safe during turbulent times.

Heartbreaking

While the book is more about the hell Leona went through in her lifetime, I do give Leona credit as her family came first and foremost over drugs and/or alcohol. I agree with the previous review, that the end of the book, narrated by the author himself is the best part. However, I would recommend this book as it is an eye opener to things that really do go on in our world.
