Publisher's summary

A new kind of manifesto for the working woman, with tips on building wealth and finding balance, as well as inspiration for harnessing the freedom and power that comes from a breadwinning mindset.

Nearly half of working women in the United States are now their household's main breadwinner. And yet, the majority of women still aren't being brought up to think like breadwinners. In fact, they're actually discouraged - by institutional bias and subconscious beliefs - from building their own wealth, pursuing their full earning potential, and providing for themselves and others financially. The result is that women earn less, owe more, and have significantly less money saved and invested for the future than men do. And if women do end up the main breadwinners, they've been conditioned to feel reluctant and unprepared to manage the role.

In Think Like a Breadwinner, financial expert Jennifer Barrett reframes what it really means to be a breadwinner. By dismantling the narrative that women don't - and shouldn't - take full financial responsibility to create the lives they want, she reveals not only the importance of women building their own wealth, but also the freedom and power that comes with it. With concrete practical tools, as well as examples from her own journey, Barrett encourages women to reclaim, rejoice in, and aspire to the role of breadwinner like never before.

Great advice

Her life has mirrored mine, minus the accomplishments. I was raised in a 2 parent home where my dad was the breadwinner. By the time I was married I was a business owner and working toward goals. But I gave it all up when I got married. I always figured my priorities would and should shift when I got married. Fast forward to a few years ago, and now I am rebuilding my life as a mom separated from her husband with 3 young children. Had I followed the steps mentioned in this book and thought like a breadwinner, I wouldn't have missed a beat. I would have a great retirement and career to help. This book talks about investments, retirement, and all the ways women give up their power. Whether your Prince Charming comes or not, is married to you forever, or divorces you after 10 years, its ways wise to think like a breadwinner.

Incredible Guide for Female Professionals

I have read countless books on building wealth and investing but this one takes the cake. Jennifer Barrett touches on the ways in which women have been socially conditioned to depend on men for long term financial goals (buying a home, retirement, investing, etc) at a subconscious level and how our society has yet to change with the current reality that is women becoming the breadwinner of the family at an increased rate. So much valuable information in this book - it is a must read, especially for female professionals!
