Story
Many famed music producers are known for a particular sound that has its day. Rick Rubin is known for something else: creating a space where artists of all different genres and traditions can home in on who they really are and what they really offer. He has made a practice of helping people transcend their self-imposed expectations in order to reconnect with a state of innocence from which the surprising becomes inevitable. Over the years, he has learned that being an artist isn’t about your specific output, it’s about your relationship to the world.

Creating for your own pleasure - whether you're writing a novel, composing songs, or painting a landscape - can seem pointless. But as Srini Rao warns, creating then turns into a chore that can harm your self-esteem and suck the pleasure out of life rather than being a source of joy.

The result is You Are an Artist, a journey of creation through which you'll invent imaginary friends, sort books, declare a cause, construct a landscape, find your band, and become someone else (or at least try). Your challenge is to filter these assignments through the lens of your own experience and make art that reflects the world as you see it.

Story
What if the smartest people in the world understand something that the rest of us don't? (They do.) What if they know that in order to achieve success, they will sometimes have to do things that others may initially perceive as stupid? The fact of the matter is that the smartest people in the world don't run from stupid, they lean into it (in a smart way). In The Power of Starting Something Stupid, Richie Norton redefines stupid as we know it, demonstrating that life-changing ideas are often tragically mislabeled stupid.

Story
Until recently Tess Vigeland was a longtime host of public radio's Marketplace. It was a rewarding, high-status job, and Tess was very good at it - but she'd begun to feel restless. Without any definite, clear sense of what she wanted to do next (but an absolute certainty that what she'd been doing was no longer truly satisfying), she walked away from her dream job and into a vast unknown. Suddenly she was no longer " Marketplace's Tess Vigeland"; she was just Tess Vigeland.

Just what I needed to hear
I loved this book. Todd is always so real and funny whenever he reads his own books and it makes it feel like he is talking to you directly as a friend giving advice and encouragement instead of just some guy reading words on a page.
I had been in a creative rutt for a bit and Todd's books, especially this one, always pull me out of it and get me inspired to work.

Practical advice from a likable creative
Todd Brison’s books have inspired me to get back on my creative track several times. I love his narration and the way he suggests practical advice with an encouraging nudge to change the narrative that didn’t work and see your worth. Whenever I need a creative pick-me-up or a reminder that I can - and deserve to- make money pursuing my art, I revisit The Unstoppable Creative.

Must read for all creatives
For my entire life, I've loved creating. Whether it's writing, making videos on my YouTube channel, or some other form of creativity, I just have things in my brain that I need to get out to the world. That's why I'm so glad I came across the work of Todd Brison. Recently, I read his first book The Creative's Curse during a time when I was kind of in a creative slump, and it was super inspiring. So, I picked up this book and loved it as well.
The Unstoppable Creative is more about developing a practice and how to get your work out there. What I love about Todd's method is that he doesn't overwhelm you with advice. He knows that there's compound interest in creating small, meaningful practices. If you're an artist, writer, musician, or any other type of creator, I guarantee you'll benefit from this book.

Great peptalk
I need peptalks, regularly, to keep me going. Todd is great at that. He provides good information in an upbeat and transparent way. He is not posing as an expert, he is someone who has done it a while and shares his experience. I appreciate that. I also enjoyed his first book, The Creative's Curse. I listened to both more than once and plan to listen, again. I enjoy hearing him read his own book, also. I usually prefer to hear authors read their own books, even if they are not very good at it, but Todd is really relaxed and seems to enjoy doing the narration, so it is enjoyable for the listener. I recommend this book, his other book, and his blog and youtube channel.
