Critic reviews

"How to Be an Artist has relevance way beyond the art world. With his typical clarity and compassion, Jerry Saltz outlines a path for anyone who wants to dedicate their lives to chasing something they believe in. Even as a chef, I have Jerry’s advice ringing through my brain at all times." (David Chang)

"In How to Be an Artist, Jerry Saltz is so right-on it scares me." (Cindy Sherman)

“Inspiration leaps off the pages from Jerry Saltz’s new book on creativity. One wants to say he’s revealing secrets, but really, he’s revealing intuition - intuition formed from decades of thinking about art. This book is for the artist or non-artist, for the person who gets plain English, for the person who understands that practical talk can coax out the mystical messages that lie underneath.” (Steve Martin)

Genuine voice

It was a genuine account on what it is to be an artist and the vitality art has. The fact that the narrator is Jerry Saltz, the author himself adds to this genuine voice, relatable and revealing. I would recommend, not only to artists, but to all creatives. What resonates with me is the one that talks about limitation of time, it got me thinking of working quicker; in these times of isolation and limitation. Hope everyone has a similar experience

Am inspired with each reading

I have read and listened to this book multiple times. I’m an artist, and this book has reminded me again and again what I love about art and making art, and shone a light forward in times of lethargy. I love this book.

Dear Jerry

It’s a good book because it encourages artists, fills gaps of knowledge, and cures some excuses with wisdom. It helped me to understand structure in my field and gain insight into art critic methods of thinking.

Straight truth!

Exactly what every creative person needs to hear. Saltz doesn’t hold back on the simple truths- the good, the bad, and the frightening. It is refreshing to have an honest voice say, “Get to work,” without dancing around the issues us creative types use to avoid making their art. No “new age” or “wishy washy” assurances here. He’s given us a concise, focused, fatherly command to get busy. Although he speaks to visual artists, the message applies to all creative endeavors. I’m going to get to work now!

Embrace this book!

I’m an artist, 63 years of age. I found Jerry’s words so inspiring. He made me gel like I was a 20 year old artist again, open to discovering and learning all I can about myself and being an artist.
I paint a lot of celebrities, musicians and sports. So for that, a lot of people don’t take my art seriously. I always wonder, if I should try something more “fine art”. After reading this and listening to Jerry’s words and wisdom I feel that way no more.

EMBRACE YOUR GENRE! Those words really hit home. So I take to my work with a renewed spirit thanks to Jerry.

If you’re an artist in and medium , there will definitely be a stroke of genius painted in this book you can relate to and find inspiring.

Thank you Jerry.
