About this listen

Book three of the Ciaphas Cain series.

An old rival, infighting with fellow Astra Militarum regiments and the small matter of a cult devoted to the Chaos God Slaanesh derail Commissar Cain's hope for a quiet and uneventful mission.

Ciaphas Cain's latest mission takes him and his Valhallan regiment to the planet of Adumbria to defend against an approaching Chaos invasion. However, infighting with fellow Imperial Guard regiments from the world of Tallarn, commanded by an old 'friend' of Cain's from the Schola Progenium and the uprising of a sinister cult on the planet puts paid to any hopes of an easy life.

Hero of the Imperium

I love Cain and his band of Valhallans. The presence of Slaanesh cultists was pretty neat to witness as they seldom appear in novels.

there were some pretty obvious and bad skips and hiccups in the narration. otherwise another great BL book with some of my favorite voice actors!

Ciaphas Cain in the thick of it again

Great story however there's a piece missing from this one like the first.A short story The Beguiling much like Fight or Flight beforeFor the Emperor It gets some what picked up. It doesn't ruin the story, for all be it a surprise even for Cain...

Solid entry

More of the popcorn-munching goodness you expect of these books.
There is a short section where the editor didn't remove a few takes of a single line from the text, but I honestly didn't mind it.

Excellent

I've been loving the Cain series and this cast makes all the more enjoyable, I nowhere Stephen's voice in my head as I read other Cain books and Penelope has what I can only describe as a sexy voice.

Another Solid Read

To be honest I'm not a big fan of Chaos in my 40k stories. A lot of authors tend to just use "Chaos" as the threat and ignore the different factions within it. I'm happy to report that we are told which chaos god is the focus of the enemy in this book - it makes for a much more enjoyable experience reading about cultists acting in a manner that reflects their theology. The rest of the book in good although I didn't enjoy it as much as the first two - it's not bad by any means and it probably reflects my anti chaos bias more than anything. The performances were top notch as always.

The Chapters are a lie

While the Story is great and the Voice actors phenomenal the chapters are out of Stnch from the Catalog so and also there was weird cut offs with Cain’s voice actor liked they subbed someone in where they lost Audio of the VA other than that it’s a great book

For your consideration, Nobel committee

While I love a lot of the books in the Warhammer 40k universe, Ciaphas Cain is unique in tone and style.
The universe is taken completely serious and all the jokes come from the story and characters, not from the "look how silly this wargame-fluff really is if you think about it".

The story is nothing too complicated, but enough is happening for you to stay interested and to get Cain into dangerous situations despite his expressed wish to avoid them...

And the production and performances are making this a great listen, well worth it to buy as an audiobook even though I've already read the physical book a couple of times.

Of the Warhammer 40000 Franchise this is one of my top three series of books, and the one I most often return to for some light reading... or listening.
