A great narrator can make any story shine

I already love anything and everything about the Texas Rangers so selling me on the content was easy. Making the story believable and enjoyable is the difficult part of any Audible book and this narrator nailed it. His pitch and pace were near perfect. I find myself alone alot during my older years and I turn to Audible to listen to a great story. I'm often hesitant to buy a new story strictly because of I don't know how the narrator will sound. in this case, the narrator hit a home run. As for the content, it's about the Texas Rangers so it's bound to be good. Short version: get the book. You'll enjoy it!

Thank God No Revisionist History

This is a great book. It's hard to beat the works of Walter Prescott Webb. Given this was written in 1935, it's just cut and dry history. Now there is always the mystique of the Texas Rangers, that will always live in infamy. They were a bunch of rough men who could tussle with anyone. But would you want it any other way? For one who gets fed up with apologies, revisionist history, this is a breath of fresh air.

Now it does drag on a bit in parts, but the overall writing makes up for it. And it is important to note what year each chapter is taking place in. That can get a bit confusing at times, as it's written in Roman numeral chapters. All of these are excessively minor details though and don't detract from anything. Kevin Stillwell's narration makes this an absolute delight. He couldn't be more perfect for this work. And his voice imperfectly clearly up to a 1.3 plus narration speed. That rarely happens. This is a gem.

Pronunciations are important!

If you’re going to talk like you’re from the Great State, then learn how to pronounce the names! Hearing these mispronunciations over and over is like listening to nails on a chalkboard.
Bosque is “BOSS-key”
Nueces is “new-ACES”
Guadalupe is “goo-WA-da-loop”
Lampassas is “lamb-PASS-is”
