About this listen

The New York Times best-selling author of The Event Group series launches a new series of paranormal thrillers just in time for Halloween.

Built at the turn of the 20th century by one of the richest and most powerful men in the world, tucked away in the pristine Pocono Mountains, Summer Place, a retreat for the rich and famous, seems the very essence of charm and beauty, "a scene borrowed from a wondrous fairy tale of gingerbread houses, bright forests, and glowing, sunny meadows". But behind the yellow and white-trimmed exterior lurks an evil waiting to devour the unwary.

Seven years ago Professor Gabriel Kennedy's investigation into paranormal activity at Summer Place ended in tragedy and destroyed his career. Now Kelly Delaphoy, the ambitious producer of a top-rated ghost-hunting television series, is determined to make Summer Place the centerpiece of an epic live broadcast on Halloween night. To ensure success she needs help from the one man who has come face-to-face with the evil that dwells in Summer Place, a man still haunted by the ghosts of his own failure. Disgraced and alienated from the academic community, Kennedy wants nothing to do with the event. But Summer Place has other plans.

As Summer Place grows stronger, Kennedy, along with the paranormal ghost hunting team, The Supernaturals, sets out to confront and, if possible, destroy the evil presence dwelling there.

Reader needs to stop and take a breath...

... and pause for scene transitions. Hampered an otherwise great story. Bloody good haunted house tale.

Thoroughly enjoyable ghost story with an ending I didn't see coming. Will definitely be getting the next one.

A Ghost Hunt Movie Sparked by Words

Stephen R. Thorne did a great job with the wide range of characters that make up the story. If you are in the mood for an engaging fireside tale with a taunting evil, a mystery and a diverse cast, you should snag this book because it has all of that and more. The characters truly drive the story and they will be the main reason you will want to stick around until the very end. The author mixed some very original individuals with a batch of contemporary buttheads. Overall, this story had the right mix of spook, action, supernatural slants and edgy horror that was very entertaining.

Many Characters wow

I enjoyed the premise of this for the most part. the 3mding was a little unclear. bad things happened they got the proof they wanted but they all got fired. not sure what that's about. 🤔 the story was pretty good, I didn't expect the twist. there were alot of people to keep track of so that was annoying. otherwise pretty good book. the narrator wasn't right for this story. he didn't make it sound creepy at all. a good narrator can really sell a story. sorry for grammar errors. I am typing really quick in my phone.

Long - but good

First off - this is a very long book. Like, you put it on and road-trip. Or do some other project that takes a couple of days. I am not really sure WHY this book is so long, it definitely could have been cut down.
But if you have the time to commit, it's a good listen. I liked the reality show aspect, although there were so many different characters I sometimes forgot who was what. HOWEVER - that doesn't really matter. As long as you know the main guys, you're good.
Overall I enjoyed it, and I would recommend to somebody else looking for a good old-fashioned ghost story/haunted house book.

Awesome!

Loved the book! One of the best suspenseful books I’ve read in a long time. Was on the edge of my seat the last half of the book and couldn’t stop listening! Highly recommend for story and narration.

A great Howl-ween listen

Throne’s narration is nothing less the spectacular. Even the variance in voice for the Native American accent adds something special. He has moved to the top of my list of favorites.

The story interesting enough to keep you actively listening.

Narrator wasn’t very good

The story was ok… I think it might’ve been better if the narrator was able to do different voices better. It was hard to tell when it was a woman speaking or a male—which got confusing. Towards the end, I just started skipping through chapters to get to the good part

Over the top and hard to swallow

Spoiler alert: This review will give a few things away.
I love a good haunted house story and I had high hopes for this one. The blurb sounded quite intriguing. And it started well. An investigation of the house that purportedly inspired Shirley Jackson to write The Haunting of Hill House? Great idea! But things go downhill fairly rapidly. First, we have a fictional show called Hunters of the Paranormal, which regularly gets a rating of around 30 million. What? In what universe would such a show get ratings like that? And then we have the fact that, before the big, live, Halloween special even gets going, the hosts of Hunters of the Paranormal are out (one is murdered, one quits) and the producers bring in a professor who had a disastrous investigation of the house 7 years ago and his totally unknown (by the TV audience) team. Really? And the network throws around money like it was candy. Millions.
There are a lot of characters here, and Stephen Thorne does a good job with them, but when we get near Halloween and the supernatural events heat up, things just get sillier and sillier. One, why oh why would anyone let this live telecast go on despite the fact that the house is now a crime scene? Two people vanished from the test broadcast, and later they show up and one murders the other, but no. Go ahead and do your show.
The biggest complaint I have is one that so many haunted house books have. Despite the weird and unexplainable things happening around them, several characters still can't bring themselves to believe in ghosts. One guy even tries to break down a window with a chair and watches as the window "heals" itself, but still thinks it's a trick. Because self-repairing windows are a thing.
It's not a good thing to reference a great novel (The Haunting of Hill House) in your mediocre novel.
Good things: I liked a lot of the characters, at least those that weren't acting like total idiots.

Too long with too many characters

I found myself daydreaming while this was playing because it just went on and on and on. It really should have been about 6 hours shorter. They borrowed many elements from other books and really didn’t do them justice. It was just Ok.
