About this listen

Once upon a time, my life was certain: It was insignificant, and it was cruel. But I refused to let it define me, no matter how great the cost.

Once upon a time, I made a wish. The world I knew grew wider than the sky and higher than the stars, and I listened to the voice within me, reaching out for freedom.

Once upon a time, my wish became my fate, and my destiny the hardest lesson to learn: Kindness may be the most difficult path, but it can save entire kingdoms.

Wonderful

Such a wonderful tale. I enjoyed the blending of this story with some fairytales. Dark at times, yet she kept her goal of kindness.
The author also narrated and did an excellent job. Her voice was clear, expressive and the brief moments of singing were lovely.

I have goosebumps!

Starla, you wrote and read a truly Wonderful book... you gave me goosebumps!!! Thank you!
This is only the second tale in this Flipped Fairy Tales and I've gotta say that it's already one of my favorite series! The first book was more or less a retelling of Snow White, with the titular character as a Prince! But, this story is so much more than that! Really, this story is not just Jack (Jacqueline) climbing the bean stalk, it's a jumping off point to a bigger, greater story, offering up a new life, and new beginnings for Jack, and something completely different for the reader!

Kudos for the bonus story towards the end, where a corvid named Ro takes center stage! Ro is a wonderful character in this universe, and is a fantastic addition to Jack's story... Jack recognized Ro as a crow, albeit a very BIG crow, but a crow nonetheless, rather early in her (Jack's) story, but that's before Ro starts changing into something else! So now I really want/need to know... Just what the heck IS Ro?!?? I'd be happy if Ro's just a Damn Big, very colorful crow, but I'm laying odds that he's actually a creature straight out of mythology!

Even Better then the First Book

We love the flipped fairy tales and although we really enjoyed the first book this one was even better. Having the author read this was pretty amazing - she was a great narrator and it just shows that some authors really should be the readers of their stories. This was pretty different from the original tale of Jack and the Bean Stalk but it does seem to be the trend in most media to portray the females as the strong heroine character - not complaining. If you like the flipped or redone fairy tale type stories then you should give this one a try.

I love when a fairytale is "flipped" and it is...

Better than the original. The author read this audiobook and showed her talent not only as a writer but a reader who brought her characters to life. I loved that it was her kindness that lead her even though she came from a dark beginning it did not sour her world view. I reccomend for anyone who likes seeing the stories they grew up with grow too.

Once again, amazing!

I read the first of Starla’s flipped fairytales and loved it! This book seemed a little different, with what I consider to be a slightly bigger deviation from the original fairytale, but did not fail to disappoint! I found the first chapter or two a bit of a struggle to get through, but after that I was hooked and couldn’t put it down. I really appreciated the message of kindness and compassion towards others, I think it’s a good message to keep in mind but one that can get lost or forgotten in modern day, fast-paced life. I also liked the subtle references to the first book included in this one (while reading the first is by no means necessary to enjoy this story, I recommend it anyway just because it was a great book)

The narration of the audiobook is decent. The sound quality is good with no issues or excessive pauses, however the narrator I’d say is average. Not bad by any means, but I’ve heard better.

Overall I highly recommend these flipped fairytales and can’t wait for more in the series!

Delightful

This was a delightful re-telling of fairy tales. Innocent in every way, beautiful for children and adults. The heart of this book is inspiring, inspiring us to kindness and hope. I was given this book at my request in exchange for an honest review. I am grateful, it was very uplifting. Sharla Huchton is a gifted writer and narrator. Her skill in communicating the personalities of male and female characters was impressive. As a children's book, I give it four stars; for the performance, five stars. I wish I could have given it ten stars for the performance.

Wonderful series!

Starla Huchton is an amazing writer! I have read both books in this series and loved them both. This story offers a wonderful heroine, named Jacqueline but goes by Jack, who discovers herself along her journey. She is a smart and uplifting character. I finished the book in one day, as it was fast moving and easy to follow. I really enjoyed this series and cannot wait for the next!

Intriguing and fascinating

I received this copy for a fair and unbiased review.

I loved this book. Jack was an amazing and deep character that held me in the story from the beginning to the end. It was a new and fun twist on the story but it was more than that. It was an original story all it’s own. The songs and performances were brilliant.
I also loved the bonus short story at the end that gave more depth to the story. I cannot wait to hear more by this author.
