About this listen

"Dervla McTiernan has rocked the crime fiction world with good reason. Taut, tense and darkly addictive. A treat for lovers of fine crime writing." (Candice Fox, author of Crimson Lake)

Being brilliant has never been this dangerous....

When Dr. Emma Sweeney stumbles across the victim of a hit-and-run outside Galway University late one evening, she calls her partner, Detective Cormac Reilly, bringing him first to the scene of a murder that would otherwise never have been assigned to him.

A security card in the dead woman's pocket identifies her as Carline Darcy, a gifted student and heir apparent to Irish pharmaceutical giant Darcy Therapeutics. The multibillion-dollar company, founded by her grandfather, has a finger in every pie, from sponsoring university research facilities to funding political parties to philanthropy - it has funded Emma's own groundbreaking research. The enquiry into Carline's death promises to be high-profile and high-pressure.

As Cormac investigates, evidence mounts that the death is linked to a Darcy laboratory and, increasingly, to Emma herself. Cormac is sure she couldn't be involved, but as his running of the case comes under scrutiny from the department and his colleagues, he is forced to question his own objectivity. Could his loyalty to Emma have led him to overlook evidence? Has it made him a liability?

Praise for The Scholar

"The Scholar is a gripping follow-up to McTiernan's debut crime novel The Ruin, featuring the enigmatic DS Cormac Reilly.... The Scholar is a tightly plotted, fast-paced read with enough twists to keep you guessing right to the end." (Better Homes & Gardens)

"Another thrilling tale that delivers on all the promise of McTiernan's debut - not to be missed." (Readings Monthly)

Another success!

I read The Scholar after finishing Dervla McTiernan's The Ruin and was
totally impressed with her writing and police procedures; loved it.

Just as good as The Ruin!

My review of the Ruin applies equally to this book.
So often there’s a hero in these kind of books, but they tend to be superhuman in so many ways.
I like that this main character is a hero because he has his flaws and listens to others, snd can appreciate the value of others less senior than himself in running investigations.
Excellent read. Again.
Thank you.

Just like The Ruin, this book sucked me in. The Irish setting seems so beautiful and I still love seeing the story from so many different perspectives. I am happy we got more Carrie in this one too. I was really hoping we would see more sides to Cormac in this book, but it still seems like there's just nothing there. Even his partner, Emma, who gets caught up in the latest murder, seemed more dynamic than him. There is even a part where he tells a witness a sad story about his past including his parents and you think "oh here we go!" Only for him to tell the other detective afterwards that he made the story up and his parents are wonderful people and happily married. I honestly think she should have made this the Carrie O'Hallaran series.
