About this listen

When the dollar collapses, widespread rioting and looting threaten the peace of a family in Zanesville, Ohio. Eight children tragically lose their parents in the chaos. The oldest, lovesick 19-year-old Sophie, is forced to care for her defenseless and hungry siblings in a stretch of woods surrounded by lawless anarchy.

Their father has been killed. Their mother and Adam, Sophie's fiancé, have gone missing. Running out of food and facing threats from encroaching marauders, they are tempted to doubt God's love.

When Sophie discovers her fiancé has resorted to looting to survive, she cannot bring herself to forgive him, however hard he tries to make amends. Must he sacrifice everything to win her back?

When they capture a thief, they learn the attack on their home was no random act of violence. Torn between justice and mercy, with their allies turning against them, their faith is heated in the fire. Will God answer their prayers and deliver them, or must their faith remain blind to facts?

I tried to like it but I just couldn't. Nearly an hour away from the ending and I gave up.

I wanted to like it

This is so poorly written, and wildly unrealistic it is hard to listen to. The lead character is unrelatable, childish, hypocritical, self righteous, and whiny. She's also largely and directly responsible for the suffering and death in her family, yet this causes no problem in the story. This is barely acknowledged by any of the characters, people just don't behave that way. The survival aspect of the story is also so unrealistic as to bar any belief in it. This book is filled with awkward and ham-handed attempts to pass on Christian ideals. While the goal was laudable, the execution is awful. This book is not worth the time or the money required to listen to it. I sincerely hope they rework the screenplay for the movie, else the movie is going to be awful too. In my opinion the only bright spot here was the performance by the narrator.
