About this listen

From the award-winning master of horror and Afrofuturism Tananarive Due comes a modern classic of dark introspection.

When Jessica marries David, he is everything she wants in a family man: brilliant, attentive, ever youthful. Yet she still feels something about him is just out of reach. Soon, as people close to Jessica begin to meet violent, mysterious deaths, David makes an unimaginable confession: More than 400 years ago, he and other members of an Ethiopian sect traded their humanity so they would never die, a secret he must protect at any cost. Now, his immortal brethren have decided David must return and leave his family in Miami. Instead, David vows to invoke a forbidden ritual to keep Jessica and his daughter with him forever.

Harrowing, engrossing, and skillfully rendered, My Soul to Keep traps Jessica between the desperation of immortals who want to rob her of her life and a husband who wants to rob her of her soul. With deft plotting and an unforgettable climax, this tour de force reminiscent of early Anne Rice will win Due a new legion of fans.

I still love it!!!

I have the immortal book series by Due and have enjoyed reading them years ago. So now having the audio versions is like a new adventure all over again, listening to the story from someone else's lips. I love her and hope that she connects with Jordan Peele and bring this book to life in a movie!!! I think he would do an amazing job bringing this story to the big screen, a 5 or 6 part mini series would be amazing! I'm allowed to dream.... aren't I!😊

So good. Why isn’t this a movie already?

Maybe it was the performance. This was suspenseful. I wanted to close my eyes and barely peek to see what would happen. But I can’t do that here, can I? This could be a beautiful, complex, thought provoking movie. Come on, Netflix!

What a phenomenal introduction to a world

I do not want to give anything any, so I will simply say this as an author, Ms. Due has created a wonderful tale. As a narrator, a Peter Frances James has the ability to draw you in, never letting go. I for one cannot wait to continue with the African Immortals series.

Never disappointed!

This author is one of my favorite! I’ve enjoyed all of her books. If you’ve never read her work before, this is a great series to start with.

It took a while to get used to a male performing all of the voices but the story is so good, that ceased to be important.

Good book

This was a good book but OMG it was long! At any rate, I definitely got to know the characters in depth and I would like to have learned a little more about what the deal was with Grandpa and the lady in the tree. I will probably read more by this author, when I have a lot of time on my hands.

Captivating!

From start to finish this story is engaging and strong. The characters are complicated and real. The story is familiar yet unknown. I highly recommend this story.

What a wonderful read

Black authors matter! My Soul to Keep - the story and narration - are just fantastic. I’m so glad I found Ms. Due on Horror Noire on Shudder.

Distrust and Loneliness

It would be frightening to live forever, always watching those around you grow old and leave you behind. And if they couldn't know? How much more isolating would that be? To never share one's truth, live a full life with those you love, and lose a sense for life's purpose seems a special kind of horror. Would that horror with you into a monster? Would you know if you had become one? Does any monster know what they are, or does the greyness of human choice distract us from our true self? Is anyone ever fully monstrous? If the monster is someone you love, can you see it? Can we trust our perceptions of people?

This story is horrifying in it's exploration of the myriad ways human trust can suffer betrayal--from losing trust in one's autonomy to seeing the monstrous true face of someone you love.
