Publisher's summary

In a steel-and-lead-encased bunker 20 feet below the basement level of his house, a soldier waits for his final orders. On the surface, a plague ravages the planet, infecting over 90% of the populace. The bacterium burrows through the brain, destroying all signs of humanity and leaving behind little more than base, prehistoric instincts. The infected turn into hyper-aggressive predators, with an insatiable desire to kill and feed. Someday soon, the soldier will have to open the hatch to his bunker, and step out into this new wasteland, to complete his mission: Subvenire refectus. To rescue and rebuild.

The Remaining is the first book in the best-selling series, which tells a gritty tale of survival, perseverance and fighting to get back what has been lost.

top notch! highly recommended!

If you could sum up The Remaining in three words, what would they be?

thrilling, creepy, realistic

Which scene was your favorite?

the infected hoard scene. reminded me of some of the scenes from the movie, world war z, with hard-charging zombies.

Any additional comments?

this is a great book! definitely in my top 5. the author does things right. w/o divulging too much, lee works for the dept. of homeland security. he is one of the 48 coordinators spread across the lower 48 states. his job is to get into a bunker whenever something big happens. sometimes, he's in for a couple of days, and sometimes he's in for a week or two. when the fury virus hits, frank lee's commander orders him into his bunker. as the story opens, lee is going stir crazy b/c this is the longest he's ever gone being cooped up in the bunker, and the news is not good- people are killing each other. it's july 3rd and all of the news web sites are stuck on news from june 28th. lee is eagerly awaiting his regularly scheduled call from frank, hoping frank will give him the low down. lee's only companion is his trained german shepherd, tango.

the author does a great job portraying the emotions lee goes through, from feeling antsy, anxious, and claustrophobic in his bunker to being jumpy and nervous when leaving his bunker for the first time. the range of emotions lee goes through is totally believable and realistic.you can feel what he is going through.

i found the pacing of the story to be perfect. the author doesn't rush the plot, and the plot keeps moving. there are no slow points, and you won't get bored at all. there's plenty of character development mixed in with the action.

while this is not a traditional zombie book, i really dug the spin the author put on it. the infected are alive, aggressive, and fast, reminiscent of 28 days later. just like in that movie, when the infected show up in this story, it is heart pounding!

christian rummel's narration perfectly fits lee. he was a pleasure to listen.

overall, a truly exceptional and realistic apocylaptic story. if you're into end of the world or zombie stories, you'll definitely want to add this to your library. i highly recommend it!

Too much cursing.

If you could sum up The Remaining in three words, what would they be?

Plauge, Survival, Cursing

Who was your favorite character and why?

Definately Lee. He is described very well and is has very realistic relationships especially with is dog.

What about Christian Rummel’s performance did you like?

HE brought the words to life. He did much more than read it. He really PERFORMED it.

Any additional comments?

I love this series and can't wait for the newest book to come out. My only beef with this series is the cursing. I know that most apocalypse survival novels I have tried have had loads of cursing. I guess everyone in the apocalypse curses like a disgruntled sailor turned construction worker who has just slammed their thumb with a hammer. But I think it can be toned down a bit. I know there are many more words a person can use when they are pissed than the same F and S-Bombs over and over and over.

Fast, Low Intelligence Zombie - Damn.

Breaking the tradition of slow, ambling zombies who have lost all vestiges of the basic of thought patterns, D.J. Molles presents a force to be fearful of.

I have thoroughly enjoyed the journey through the wastelands of what used to be the US of A. But, what makes this romp even better is the superb narration of Christian Rummel. The speed of his narration, tone, and voices make this book even better.

I'm definitely buying the other books in this series.

Suspense!

Would you listen to The Remaining again? Why?

Excellent story and narration. Compels me to keep listening.

Who was your favorite character and why?

The main character, Lee, is the guy I'd like to be: Competent, but not perfect. Morally sound, but confused by overwhelming events.

Which scene was your favorite?

Lee's initial exit, but I don't want to spoil things.

Any additional comments?

I roll through audible books, and have heard lots of narrators. This one is superb. He can effect lots of voices, including womens' and girls', and it's like listening to a play.

Pretty good

This was a pretty good listen. The story is pretty interesting and kept my attention. My only complaint would be that all of the male voices sounded the same to me, which I found annoying after a while. Other than that this is a pretty engaging survival story. I appreciated that "The Infected" are not zombies. As usual, I struggled with some of the characters that are a bit thick headed, but that's to be expected. I'm planning to give the sequel a listen.

Time flies by

Would you consider the audio edition of The Remaining to be better than the print version?

I wouldn't know I assume they are the same

Who was your favorite character and why?

All of them! I don't have a favorite they were so individualalized I felt like I knew them.

Which scene was your favorite?

Uh mmm, how do I pick one. I guess when (spoiler) jack gets bit

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

(Spoiler)when he had to kill his dog.

Any additional comments?

I couldn't put this book down. I was looking for every single second to listen.

Glad I found this series

This is a fun series, as the genre goes there are quite a few poorly written books out there, finding a book that is well written goes a long way in this category, and this is one of them. The action is tight, the pandemic that causes the 'plague' interesting and the cast of characters well done, developed, believable. Dialog is actually good dialog and not something comic book like. The main character seems to loose his weapon a lot for a special forces guy but then nothing is perfect, he is great character and does the right thing when the chips are down. I like this book and am already into the 3rd book in the series as a result, Highly recommended.

Inane writing for an Inept hero

I wanted to like this story, had a lot of good story pieces but the writing was quite inane for a main character (Lee) who is supposed to be a highly trained battle hardened special forces type soldier. Instead the main character (Lee) moves from one self-inflicted crisis to another and only escapes due to stupid luck and contrived circumstances. Lee is clearly not a highly trained soldier and is a slow learner who consistently makes stupid decisions without any strategic thinking. This makes what could have been a good story line difficult to stick with.

Hardcore to the point of stupidity.

Any additional comments?

I have enjoyed Day by Day Armageddon, Zombie Fallout, etc. I liked the idea of a new type of zombie which avoided the undead issue. I expected to enjoy this book, and I figured there would be some excessive gung-ho-ness, but what the heck. It's the end of the world, right?

Apparently, I have now found my limit in male fantasy military literature. This book spent probably a good third in excruciatingly fond detail over every weapon, piece of equipment, and battle. Too bad the author couldn't be bothered to spend a fraction of that time exploring his characters.

This is my first time listening to Christian Rummel, and I thought he did an excellent job in elevating what was essentially drivel. Because of his awesome narration, I was able to listen until the end, but just barely. I couldn't be bothered to care enough to listen to the free preview which came after.

If you like post apocolypse you will like this one

Where does The Remaining rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would say this book is right up there with others that I have read. I really liked the way the main character is introduced and his "mission". Nice twist on a often written about subject.

What about Christian Rummel’s performance did you like?

Christian Rummels performance was first rate. I would listen to him again.

Any additional comments?

I have only read the first book in this series, but I am looking forward to the rest. I even got my wife hooked while taking a road trip.
