Publisher's summary

An outcast. A prince. And a deadly rebellion....

After a lifetime of rejection, seamstress Evie can't trust Frederic, the crown prince of Lanover - not his words of friendship or the way the warmth in his eyes seems to ask for even more. But when they end up on a tour of his kingdom - one filled with increasing danger - Evie's mistrust might doom them all.

In this spin on the classic fairy tale, an ugly duckling must discover her true worth in order to save her kingdom and maybe even find true love.

Good series

I have been caught up in this series all week. I listened to all 5 books, and will start the next box series as well. I love fairy tale retellings and listening to books with accents different than my own so I enjoyed the narration, however the narrator tends to swallow very loudly during pauses, I think this is a personal annoyance that maybe only I notice. Occasionally I have to skip back bc her voice becomes background noise, but otherwise, great stories!

Great!

I love this collection of fairy tale retellings and this last book definitely did not disappoint. I loved the characters and the descriptions of the different parts of the Lanover kingdom. The narrator was enjoyable to listen to. I can't wait for the next series!

Absolutely wonderful!

I just discovered Melanie Cellier’s books a few months ago and have been OBSESSED with listening to them on Audible ever since. This one might just be my new favorite! The story was absolutely wonderful, very sweet and charming and fun to listen to, and the narrator knocked it out of the park on this one! Her male voices can be hit or miss, but she did a great job with this one and she always puts so much emotion and drama into her voice that listening to the story is very engaging and transporting. I definitely recommend reading this entire series! Brava, Esther Wane! Brava, Melanie Cellier!

My absolute favorite!

This is my favorite book in the entire series (and possibly of all time.) There is the perfect amount of romance, humor & action, and the characters are all so lovable! Celine is such a star, and it makes sense why she’s popular enough to basically be mentioned in every book going forward, she truly is a gem. Cassian is the perfect right hand man, and I judge books not only on the swoon-worthy princes, but also on how well their wingman is written. The only thing that could make this book better was if it was longer!!

So enjoyable and beautifully written

I have so much enjoyed this whole series by Melanie Cellier, that I tried a few other similar-looking books, only to be somewhat disappointed by the lack of depth in the writing and characterization of those I tried. Returning to this final book in the Four Kingdoms Series, I can see that Melanie's vocabulary choices definitely sparkle--they are always beyond the basic and hold my attention. The characterization of Evie and Celine is also excellent and made me enjoy spending time with both of them, and I appreciate that having the plot be moved along by unwise choices on the part of the female leads, is kept to a minimum! While the Ugly Duckling connection is indeed somewhat loose, as other reviewers mention, I thought the story of Evie's having so many things in her past to come to terms with, is well told and convincing without being too psychologically self-indulgent. I wish that we could have gotten to know Frederick and Cassian better, but I can see why that was not possible within the framework of how Cellier chose to tell the story. I'm so glad that Melanie Cellier decided to write these clean, lovely books with an emphasis on character and how serving others is part of our purpose as humans. They are enjoyable to listen to and also help me do my work the next day with cheerfulness! And Esther Wane's narration has also been terrific-- different characters are clear, and every word is beautifully inflected. I highly recommend!
