About this listen

The Narrow Caves is the first Audiostate™ ever released, a new product combining the grandiosity of Hollywood films with the intimacy of audio to create an "ear-movie" experience. Adapted from a script by award-winning novelist, screenwriter, and director S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk, Wraiths of the Broken Land), The Narrow Caves features voice acting by Vincent D'Onofrio (Full Metal Jacket, Daredevil), Will Patton (Armageddon, Falling Skies), Lili Simmons (Bone Tomahawk, Banshee) and Wyatt Russell (Everybody Wants Some, Black Mirror). Binary Reptile provides an eerie score that contributes to the cinematic feel of this haunting piece.

Synopsis:

In Florida, 1983, two college students meet at a yard party and do not hit it off. Walter and Ruby have no reason to reprise this antagonistic encounter, but something strange and almost primordial burgeons within each of them. Their thoughts and dreams turn toward each other, and in very little time they find themselves in an intense and unique relationship. What lies at the bottom of their strange connection is unearthed when Walter joins Ruby on a holiday trip to her home in upstate New York, where a living darkness inhabits the woodlands that surround her family's mansion. This engrossing and unpredictable blend of mystery, horror, and romance subverts the idea of "fated love" while exploring strange compulsions, intense desires, and ancient mysteries that are best left buried deep in the earth.

A True Ear Movie Experience in Horror

Where does The Narrow Caves rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

This is a truly unique experience. Given the cast, the production effects, the brilliant story, and the score, this feels more cinematic than the audiobooks I've heard. It's meant to. And the production, it's GREAT! "A movie for your mind" sounds cliche, but it's true -- you'll walk away with the feeling that you've "seen" this movie, and you have... in your imagination.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I'm in love with the horror of what lurks in the caves... I can't give away too much, but it's absolutely terrifying. Otherwise, the main characters ALL deliver top-notch performances.

Any additional comments?

Overall, I'm extremely satisfied with this cinematic "ear movie" experience and I'll definitely be tuning in to what other productions will be made. If you're in the mood for a genuinely creepy film for your imagination, THE NARROW CAVES delivers.

For fans of pulp 80s John Carpenter & Stephen King

Brilliant. Great narration and voice acting by Hollywood talent. Visceral, bone-gripping suspense that evokes an early, desperate Stephen King, angrily burning through shag-rag short stories like a lit fuse.

I liked it

The monster was difficult to imagine and therefore difficult to induce much fear, the build up and the intrigue were riveting but the authors aversion to tropes, which in a movie might have been wonderful, left me feelings little let down, not a lot but definitely a little.

Awesome experience!

I have never listened to an audio book like this. Mixes performances with narration, soundtrack and sound effects. It was like I had a movie playing in my ear. The story is also great and captivating. It’s a must listen!

Well-Produced, Creepy, and Extremely Enjoyable!

I absolutely loved Wyatt Russell in "Everybody Wants Some!!", so I was intrigued and excited to hear that he was starring in a new audio narrative concept. The Narrow Caves did not disappoint! Wyatt Russell and Lili Simmons’ romance is an engaging through-line for a tale that is, at its core, a very creepy mystery that is fun to try and unravel as it unfolds. There are even some laugh-out-loud moments peppered in this multi-generational horror that surprised and delighted me as I listened.

It’s important to note that this isn’t just an “audiobook” - "The Narrow Caves" is a fully-fleshed out audio movie! Talented actors bring each role to life, there is extensive sound design, and an original score by the author and composer S. Craig Zahler. Plus, at around 3 hours, it’s a length that hovers between your typical 1-hr podcast and tens of hours-long audiobook and is great for a quick road trip or weekend getaway listen.

Overall, super impressive and enjoyable. Can’t wait for the next one!

Terrifying. Intense. Moments of beauty and moments of abject horror. I adore this. Best audio drama ever.

Great concept, terrific execution!

Really wonderful use of the medium. This actually reads like a screenplay, which is an absolutely badass idea. Would strongly recommend to anyone with an interest in horror or macabre short-fiction, as well as to screenwriters everywhere. Zahler is an amazing writer with a knack for fully realized characters, savory, original storytelling, and peppering his tale with bits of shocking violence. Highly recommended!!!

Sinister! Disturbing! Not for the weak at heart!

S. Craig Zahler writes a mean horror, and this book is exactly the kind I like. Cover to cover build up of suspense and creeping, nightmarish horror around every corner. The characters feel real, the dialog is fun and the sound effects are disturbing. The cast does a great read. If you like horror, then you want this book. Buy it now, get creeped out later.
