Publisher's summary

Set in the bucolic town of Angie, Louisiana, The Lord’s Acre tells the story of Eli Woodbine, a young boy who watches helplessly as his fundamentalist parents give in to their increasing sense of desperation and paranoia, living in a world where they can no longer see any hope or reason for existing.

When the family is at their absolute lowest, they come across a local, charismatic church leader, in whom they quickly place all of their faith. Yet this man—known to them only as “Father”—is unlike anyone they have ever encountered before. But one day, and with no explanation save for a mysterious gift given to Eli, Father disappears, leaving everything behind him in ruin.

Eli and his parents attempt to pick up the pieces, however, as they try to find answers to their new predicament. But their efforts go awry when Eli breaks into an abandoned grocery store one night in order to steal food for his family. He is arrested and taken to jail, where, to his surprise, he is finally able to discover the hope he had always been so desperate to find.

Really Good And Enjoyable Coming Of Age Story

This was a really good and enjoyable coming of age story with a bit of a religion thrown into the mix. I was quite glad that the plot not only tackles faith-based topics, but it also goes into the dangers of cults, i.e. wolfs in sheep's clothing, false prophets/ teachers, and thieves. Granted, such things have always existed, even long before any of our lifetimes, but with the current digital age where everything is interconnected, it does seem as if we've seen more of a surge of cults (both inside and outside of the church). Among many things that the New Testament warns us about, the main threat that is defined throughout scripture that is dangerous to both believers and non-believers alike is false doctrine. I was very glad to see a faith-based work draw attention to this detail. Learning that this is the first book in a series, I look forward to what will be in store next and how the character will mature more in the faith. Given that we are all sinners who will never be perfect in this life, but directed the more we read, study, and obey God's word, our spiritual maturity in this life is a never ending process.

Absolutely loved it

A captivating story! It reads like a classic novel - a little dark and mysterious but with a little bit of light shining through. The "point" of the story is left up to the reader; I think there could be several different interpretations as to what the author is really getting at. It's quite entertaining and thought-provoking.

What a listen!

Listening to Eli's journey through desperation to redemption was like being on an emotional rollercoaster. I loved the mystery surrounding 'Father,' and the unexpected turns kept me engaged.

But what I really appreciated was how the story explored the theme of hope, even in the toughest circumstances.

A must listen :)

Incredible story - beautifully written & narrated

An incredibly story about a young boy who is faced with many difficulties, namely strict parents who are anti-establishment, as well as extreme poverty. They find help and peace in a church (more specifically, a cult), but what follows is both heart-breaking and mysterious. It's a story with few heroes in the end; instead, we see the realization that the line between the hero and the villain is often blurred. I'm looking forward to reading more from David Armand and hearing more from Frank Morris.

A BEAUTIFUL TALE OF YOUNG BOY.

A remarkable tale about a young child who must overcome numerous challenges, including stern, anti-establishment parents and great poverty. In a church , they find support and solace, but what happens next is both tragic and mysterious. In the end, there aren't many heroes in this tale; instead, we learn that the distinction between good and evil is frequently hazy.

Whether you are a father, mother, son, or daughter, you can do anything for your family because you love them unconditionally. Family is paramount.

The narrator did an amazing job to highlight all the emotions, highs and lows.

Touching Story

The story was well-written and I enjoyed the narration. It tells the tale of a young boy (and his family) who go through extremely hard times and turn to crime, cults and anything they can find to turn to for salvation and understanding their predicament. I truly enjoyed the book and look forward to others.
