About this listen

USA TODAY and ECPA bestselling series

Combine James Patterson and Colleen Hoover and you'll start to understand why audiences are riveted by the Murphy Shepherd series from New York Times bestselling author Charles Martin: gripping action, heart-wrenching emotion, and deep questions that deserve to be considered.

Bones—Murphy Shepherd's teacher, mentor, priest, and friend—is gone. Devastated by the loss and unsure how to continue the rescue work they started, Murph has no choice but to jump back in when the worst happens. His longtime friend and current United States vice president, Aaron Ashley, has been a silent partner in the fight against trafficking. But in spite of having the best security available, his three daughters have been taken bound and blindfolded from their home by an extraction team that left no clues and no trace—just an empty house, a bereft mother, and nine dead Secret Service agents. Only Murph and his team have a hope of finding them.

Bones may have made the ultimate sacrifice by taking down his own brother and the dark network he led, but there are still others in this network where evil is the currency and power is the prize. Soon Ashley drops out of the presidential race and a new candidate emerges--someone who is ready, too ready, to step into the race and the Oval Office.

Bones taught Murph that the needs of the one, the lost one, outweigh those of the ninety-nine. In his first rescue without Bones beside him, Murph's fight against human trafficking takes him across the globe and through the halls of government to destroy the network and save the lives and souls of those taken.

The Murphy Shepherd series is simultaneously a tender love story, a heartrending search for freedom, an exploration of the terrible cost of human trafficking, and an anthem to the power of love to create change when it shows up regardless of the cost. The Keeper raises the stakes even further, so be ready—you won't want to put it down until you reach the very last word.

Charles Martin is one of the best storytellers out there.

I am never disappointed when I pick up a Charles Martin book. He perfectly marries truth and fiction, suspense and love. He’s one of the most gifted writers God has seen fit to bless us with. This story continues the tale of Murphy Shepherd and Bones. If you are new to these characters you will enjoy the story. If you are familiar with them you’ll absolutely love this story.

Another great listen

I continue to love this series, and only wish the next (hopefully there will be one) would come out tomorrow! I pray that God would raise up more people like those portrayed here. I don’t know if any real person is quite as good but I hope they exist. I know some are trying to be. There was a lot of recap in this book (from previous books) but some added twists as well. Well worth a listen and well read as always by this narrator.

Great story

Loved it but didn't have to reread the prior books in the series before this one since they were rewritten in this one.

Thankful for a fourth!

I never imagined getting a fourth book to the Murphy Shepherd series but I’m so glad we did! The Keeper Series is my absolute favorite + this book added to it! I cried + laughed + gasped aloud. A beautiful story of love + sacrifice + how life continues even through the depths of grief.

But Bones…

I was so glad to be back at Freetown with the gang. The story opens with a somber note and we see Murph wrestling with self doubt and tormented with grief. The repercussions of the confrontation with Frank and what happens to Bones is the center of the story.

My only criticism is minor, but does distract from the story a bit. The book, I think, is designed to stand alone if you have not read the other three. That being said, in order to make it that way, the writing pulls heavily from the other books, word for word, in length. The idea is Murph is reflective and grieving, reliving important moments in his life and how Bones impacted him, thus so much drawn from the dialogue of past books. I found the reusing of whole sections from the other books a little like cheating and repetitive to those of us who have read and reread the Keeper series.

Positives? There are many! The story moves the needle, gives us new storylines, characters and sets the stage for more Murphy Shepherd books. Our favorite humble hero finds his way through grief and is once again restored to joy. A satisfying read with plenty of what you hope for in Keeper book. Continues the theme of how one person motivated by pure love can impact the lives of others. But Bones…(But GOD!)

Wonderful twist

I don’t normally leave reviews because I’m not great at it. But this book had twists I didn’t see coming. I cried multiple times. I hope there’s a book 5

Something very different

Have read almost every Charles Martin book available and he is such a gifted storyteller. This particular series, up until the fourth book, has been outstanding in so many ways . Rarely do I read a book twice, but I have reread the first three of this series and particularly enjoy the audio versions. Something is different overall in this last book, lengthy flashbacks that were not used in the last three books and quite honestly , willing to bet most of Charles Martin fans have read the series and have been anxiously awaiting this 4th book for months. The flashbacks were a huge part of this book and felt like wastes of time. Let readers buy the first three books , don’t make us read so much of past books of the series in the fourth book. Lastly, sort of felt like content bounced around and usual flow was atypical for this gifted author. Really wanted to rate a 3 for the story but just can’t because there is just something different from all his other books (not just this series) here and have a hunch it’s not on the creative end but on the business end….

Tell me what you know about sheep.

I started to be appointed so much of the book had reputation from previous books in the series. Then laughing at myself because I had just finished listening to them all in anticipation of the release, and had already listened to each one multiple times prior to that, I listened on. But this book more tears and a little laughter and great reflection. Oh, how I love Charles’ writing, wording and shared thoughts between characters. I just jump into his books and live there.
