About this listen
Their ship is damaged…
Ethan Ortane has just met his long lost son, Atton, but the circumstances could have been better. After a devastating bio-attack and the ensuing battle, they've fled Dark Space aboard the Defiant to get away from the crime lord, Alec Brondi, who has just stolen the most powerful vessel left in the Imperial Fleet--the Valiant, a five-kilometer-long gladiator-class carrier.
They are low on fuel…
They need reinforcements to face Brondi, but beyond Dark Space the comm relays are all down, meaning that they must cross Sythian Space to contact the rest of the fleet. Making matters worse, they are low on fuel, so they can't jump straight there. They'll have to travel on the space lanes to save fuel, but the lanes are controlled by Sythians now, and they are fraught with entire fleets of cloaked alien ships.
And there is no way out…
With Brondi behind them, they can't go back, and they can't afford to leave the last human sector in the galaxy to the crime lords, so they must cross through enemy territory in the Defiant, a damaged, badly undermanned cruiser with no cloaking device. Making matter worse, trouble is brewing aboard the cruiser, dropping their chances of survival from slim…to none.

AD 2150: Chris Randall just lost his job as a bodyguard. That night, after picking up his wife, Bree, from her shift at a local casino, he breaks the bad news. Moments later, thunder cracks the sky, but there’s no lightning. Flaming debris rain across the valley, and a dark mass goes sailing out of the clouds, headed straight for LA. It’s not one of the Union’s starships, because they can’t defy gravity like that. But then, what is it? The answer chills both Chris and Bree to their cores: It’s an invasion.

The United Nations of Earth sent out the Forerunner ships to explore and colonize the four most promising star systems within 50 light-years of Earth. Forerunner One left Earth under the command of Captain Clayton Cross, heading for Trappist-1. Dramatic Performance by William Dufris
I listened to this a part of my quest to find the next great SF series. And while the first two Dark Space books are quite enjoyable and better than some others I have sampled recently in the Military SF genre, it is not the next big thing for me. At this point I am still looking for the next big thing.
I am learning that I really like William Dufris as a narrator. He puts so much emotion and inflection into his performance that he makes the listening experience into more than just a duplication of your own internal voice in your head that your hear when you read. With a performer like Dufris listening to an audiobook becomes almost a different genre; akin to the comparison that can be made between reading a Science Fiction novel and watching a movie based on that same book. The story is the same, as is the plot, but they are not equal. The old cliché, “The book is better than the movie,” could have no meaning if the two were the actually equivalent. So there are audiobooks narrated by a straight reader; these closely approximating the reading experience. And then there are audiobooks narrated by a true performer elevating the book into a whole different level of entertainment. William Dufris is such a performer.

A great, but depressing second entry
In this second book, the crew of the Defiant attempt to travel across Sythian space to get to Obsidian Station. There, they hope to get help and resources to be able to get back and take the Valiant. Meanwhile, Brondi decides to go after the other human fleet, and the book also covers some of what happened to Ethan's wife Destra.
This book is so much darker than the first and things just keep getting worse and worse for the crew. Pretty much the exact opposite happens from what you would want/expect every page. It really is a bit depressing and I really hope things improve in the future books. However, there is certainly a ton of action, lots of twists and turns, and some great back story about Destra. Brondi continues his evil ways and Ethan and Atton get quite a few surprises. Illara really grows as a character here and is one of the heroes of the story.
The narrator did a great job. He has a few strange inflections at times, but for the most part he did a fine job. I particularly liked his voice for the Overlord.
Overall a great, if not depressing continuation of the story and a great lead in to the next book.
NOTE: I received this book for free in exchange for an honest review.

YA Narration Detracts
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
I think that fans of space opera will enjoy this book. It's a quick read, explains the tech pretty well, and only gets a little redundant with the explanations.
What did you like best about this story?
I thought that Scott did a good job creating an interesting story that made you want to see how it ends. Characters had flaws, and nobody was "perfect".
What didn’t you like about William Dufris’s performance?
I gave this a 3 star overall rating because the Narrator kept falling into the habit of reading the story as Young Adult themed. This story spans 12 years in the lives of the main characters, and only one of them is under 18. When I read the first book there was a little bit of this YA mentality, but in the 2nd book the narration begins to actually detract from my enjoyment of the story. When I picked up this book series I didn't consider it a YA novel, Dufris read it like a Pendragon Cycle story.
What character would you cut from The Invisible War?
Alara's mother could be removed from the story. Her only actual contribution seemed to be complaints and whining.
Any additional comments?
I recommend this story to fans of Space Opera. Skip the William Dufris performance, however.

Weak Space Cowboy SciFi
This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?
It's run of the mill space cowboy stuff, as long as you don't mind units of distance that don't make any sense in space.
What three words best describe William Dufris’s performance?
A pity that he didn't have more to work with.
What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?
Disappointment. It had been a while since I listened to the first book, and I'd simply forgotten how weak it was. Should have realized there was a reason I had not immediately moved on to more of the books (which is what I tend to do for good series)! My bad.

Would be Good if it was a Clean Story
I don't know why authors feel that they need to include filthy humor and sexual references. This could have been a good story without it. I wish audible had a filter for good clean science fiction and fantasy. Because of the content in this book I will not be continuing the story and will be returning the audio book.

move along... nothing to see here
I listened to books one and two in the series mainly due to the excellent narration, however the entire world is flat. the characters are one dimensional and there is nothing that happens in the plot that couldn't hat happened in New jersey. I think that this book Was just an effort to produce content.
