Publisher's summary

Introducing the new, unabridged version of The Infirmary by LJ Ross, the author of the international number one best-selling series, the DCI Ryan Mysteries.

There's a serial killer targeting the streets of Newcastle, seemingly picking his victims at random but subjecting them all to the same torturous end. When the chief inspector on the case goes missing, it falls on DCI Ryan to track down the man who is brutally murdering women and goading the police to 'catch me if you can'.

As everyone becomes a suspect, Ryan and his team get drawn further and further into the case, but for Ryan the nightmare gets closer to home than he could ever have imagined.

You can also listen to the multicast original drama starring Tom Bateman, Hermione Norris and Kevin Whately here.

This is FIRST Book in the DCI Ryan series

Audible have this book listed as Book 11 but it is really the first book in the series and should be numbered 0.5 I have thoroughly enjoyed the DCI Ryan series and especially following his progress and career so imagine the disappointment to find that you are back at the very first book which started the series off. The story is good as is the naration but such a disappointment that it is out of order.

Finally, the Hacker is explained.

A stellar effort by LJ Ross. It fills in some of the backstory on Ryan.

BRilliant narration

Keeble's voice talent IS unsurpassed as he seemlessly swaps accents. good thriller with many twists and turns. Highly recommended

prequel

this should be book number one in this series. I'm not sure why LJRoss did a prequel in the middle of this series, personally I don't think it was necessary. i didn't learn anything new from it. Saying that, it was good and odd course Jonathan Keeble is fabulous, but the whole time through the book I couldn't help but think, I know how this ends. I typically don't read the excerpts on the next book in this series, I just buy it and listen, I hope there's no more prequel's.

Prequel misses the mark

This is book 11 in the series. It is a prequel to earlier books. I have enjoyed all the others in this series, but this was too graphic for my tastes. Ready to start #12.

Read first

If you want to read the series from beginning to all books which I recommend I would also recommend you start with the infirmary which is a prequel to holy Island and I think you’ll enjoy a holy island and the rest of the books better..... that’s just my opinion

Good story - page Turner, night-light burner

I admit I am a wimp when it comes to the darker stories but the characters and the pace drew me in and kept me listening. The narrator was excellent; loved listening to him tell it.

Out of order

This book should be #7 or 8 not 11. The sister is alive again, Ryan and his side kick sent married, to confusing.

Out of Sequence

This is really the details of Ryan’s search for the Hacker before his sister is murdered. Her death and his grief at not being able to protect her are described in wrenching detail in other books in this series. I, for one, didn’t need to re-read that part of Ryan’s life. I kept wondering why this story was published as the details of the chase weren’t so enlightening as to warrant another entire book about it. Shame on Audible for presenting this as book 11 in the series.

Titles Out of Order - Disappointed

When I started listening to this book I thought possibly I was listening to the wrong one or that audible had accidentally put the wrong book in this title. I kept thinking I had already listened to this story, but knew I had just ordered it. I decided to look at the reviews to see if others felt the same way and they confirmed my thoughts. "The Infirmary" should be listed as the first in the series. You can imagine my disappointment when the story jumps back 5 years and we already know the final outcome, Not all the characters we now know are included because they are introduced in later books, and many of the relationships between the ones in this story have changed. I am so over 'The Butcher' and want to continue where the story leaves off in book 10. I'm going to ask for a refund and reconsider ordering any more books in this series. I enjoyed the characters and the story line, but can only take so much of one villain.
