Story
The Everglades was America's last frontier, a wild country long after the West was won. In this book Michael Grunwald chronicles how a series of visionaries tried to drain and "reclaim" it and how Mother Nature refused to bend to their will; in the most harrowing tale, a 1928 hurricane drowned 2,500 people in the Everglades. But the Army Corps of Engineers finally tamed the beast with levees and canals, converting half the Everglades into sprawling suburbs and sugar plantations.

Story
In 1937, a schoolteacher on the island of Maui challenged a group of poverty-stricken sugar plantation kids to swim upstream against the current of their circumstance. The goal? To become Olympians. They faced seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The children were Japanese-American, were malnourished and barefoot, and had no pool; they trained in the filthy irrigation ditches that snaked down from the mountains into the sugarcane fields.

Oh, Florida! To some people it's a paradise. To others it's a punch line. As Oh, Florida! shows, it's both of these, and, more important, it's a Petri dish, producing trends that end up influencing the rest of the country. Without Florida there would be no NASCAR, no Bettie Page pinups, no Glenn Beck radio rants, no USA Today, no "Stand Your Ground" - you get the idea.

Everyone knows that the United States of America is made up of 50 states and, uh...some other stuff. The territories of American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Northern Mariana Islands, and the US Virgin Islands are often neglected, but they are filled with American flags and national parks and US post offices and some four million people, many of whom are as proudly red-white-and-blue as any Daughter of the American Revolution.

Story
One of the most admired nonfiction writers of our time retells the story of one truly fabulous year in the life of his native country - a fascinating and gripping narrative featuring such outsized American heroes as Charles Lindbergh, Babe Ruth, and yes Herbert Hoover, and a gallery of criminals (Al Capone), eccentrics (Shipwreck Kelly), and close-mouthed politicians (Calvin Coolidge). It was the year Americans attempted and accomplished outsized things and came of age in a big, brawling manner. What a country. What a summer. And what a writer to bring it all so vividly alive.

Who Knew That???
I love listening to all of Bill O'neill's books as I am always learning something new. I had the pleasure of listening to this book driving down to Florida, with my daughter's over Spring break. I have been trying to get both of them into audiobooks and this was the perfect book to peek their interest, as there was interesting facts about some of the towns we were going to visit. In fact, he mentions the Presidents Hall of Fame in Clermont. I never even knew anything about it, so we added it as one of our stops while we were down there. My youngest also enjoyed the trivia questions, as she is always trying to compete with her older sister.
The narration was also great and flowed smoothly, keeping the listener entertained

Being a Floridian I am surprised I knew nothing
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
I received this audiobook a while back and the title made me think that of course I'm from Florida born and raised I know everything that is going to be talked about however that was definitely not the case. There was so many random facts that I completely did not know. For example I did not realize that heavy metal was partly originated in Florida. Also I didn't realize that Elvis Presley's first major indoor concert was in Jacksonville Florida. Who would have thought that these things are not widely known for Floridians.
This book also had some trivia questions from what the narrator told us in the chapter. I felt a bit like a pop quiz when the teacher reads you a passage from a story and then they ask,' these questions need to be answered from what I read please choose the correct answer', that is what I felt. I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised and I am very intrigued about all of these facts that I learned within this little short audiobook. I know that the author has different states that he writes about and out of curiosity I want to read the other books so I can learn more about the states that he has covered.
The narrator on the other hand he gave me teacher vibes so I felt like it was more of a teacher telling me a story tversus just a person having a conversation with me. I think if he did not pause for a prolonged period of time and just narrated as though somebody who is just a tour guide I think it would have been a bit smoother than it was. Also as a side note, being a Floridian means that I know how to pronounce certain cities within this gorgeous state but yet when the narrator says certain words I cringe. I know that if he just took the time to listen to the way people pronounce certain cities then he would not miss pronounce the words.🙄😟😒😩🤯😠
