Publisher's summary

From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Darynda Jones comes a new story in her Charley Davidson series...

The job should have been easy.

Get in. Assess the situation. Get out. But for veteran tracker Quentin Rutherford, things get sticky when the girl he’s loved since puberty shows up, conducting her own investigation into the strange occurrences of the small, New Mexico town. He knew it would be a risk coming back to the area, but he had no idea Amber Kowalski had become a bona fide PI, investigating things that go bump in the night. He shouldn’t be surprised, however. She can see through the dead as clearly as he can. The real question is, can she see through him?

But is anything that’s worth it ever easy?

To say that Amber is shocked to see her childhood crush would be the understatement of her fragile second life. One look at him tells her everything she needs to know. He’s changed. So drastically she barely recognizes him. He is savage now, a hardened - in all the right places - demon hunter, and she is simply the awkward, lovestruck girl he left behind.

But she doesn’t have time to dwell on the past. A supernatural entity has set up shop, and it’s up to them to stop it before it kills again.

While thousands of questions burn inside her, she has to put her concern over him, over what he’s become, aside for now. Because he’s about to learn one, undeniable fact: she’s changed, too.

**Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new listeners, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you'll enjoy each one as much as we do.**

Critic reviews

“Narrator Lorelei King provides an entertaining and skilled performance of this audiobook…. King keeps listeners' attention throughout the fast-paced story. She expertly switches between the various characters' unique voices. Though this is only a taste of the series, King's narration will entice listeners to order the full meal.” AudioFile Magazine

Amber and Quentin’s story

This was a fun one because last I remember Amber (and Quentin), they were young and while they had a connection, they were in high school and circumstances ended up taking them apart, although I don’t remember any of the details. In this story, they have both grown up and forged their own path as adults when a demon killing brings them back together again. It’s obvious that neither of them have ever stopped loving the other, but there is a lot of pain in their past that needs addressing. The story was told in third person, which created a little bit of distance between us and the two of them, but I think ultimately it worked because it helped us better understand both perspectives. Lorelei King does an excellent job of narrating, as usual! Recommended, especially if you’re a fan of the series!

Short but fun.

If you enjoyed the Charley Davidson books, you’ll like this novella as well. I always liked Quentin and Amber’s characters, so it was interesting to find out what had become of them after the Thirteenth Grave book ended. (I’m hoping that there will be more about them in future books.)

love the author, hated to see it end so quickly.

Loreli King was amazing as always.

Yes, I get that it was a novella, but there was so much potential that I think wasn't met. I was disappointed in how short and how rushed the story was.

Same story line 🤷🏼‍♀️ but still enjoyable

I generally liked the Charley Davidson books, so I do like the continuation, although it's basically a rehash of the same story that's been told repeatedly. It's just with different names on characters who behave the same as the ones who came previously. Same romantic misunderstandings, same unlikely make-up sex, etc.
But still entertaining (as long as you go into understanding what you're getting), & Lorelei King really brings the whole thing to life!

The Gravedigger's Son

This novella is fantastic. I love the Charlie Davison series so much. It was great getting a glimpse of Quinton and Amber all grown up. Their connection is intense. I hope there will be more from the Charlie Davison world in the near future! Lorelei King did amazing and brought me right back to these characters!
