About this listen

The Crime: The customers in a London convenience store are taken captive. Among them is a young mother, Detective Helen Weeks. She is told her life depends on the co-operation of one of her colleagues - detective Tom Thorne.

The Demand: Akhtar is desperate to know what really happened to his beloved son, who died a year before in prison. He is convinced the death was not an accident and forces the one man who knows more about the case than any other, Thorne, to re-investigate.

The Twist: What Thorne discovers will upend everything he thought he knew about the fate of those he's put away... but will it be enough to fulfill the wishes of a grieving and potentially violent father?

Critic reviews

"Ingeniously constructed... this great novel should put Billingham in the same league as Ian Rankin, Peter Robinson, John Harvey and Denise Mina. A breakthrough novel." ( Kirkus)
"Tom Thorne is the new superstar detective.... Mark Billingham is the new-wave leader of crime fiction." (Lee Child )

Fair, worth the credit

I really enjoyed the story and as with most of this genre (My favorite type of audible books) it was only slightly predictable. I did not agree with the one star rating. It is as good and as bad as most others in genre, escape listening with no lingering impression.

Great Read

Enjoyed the continuing story of DI Tom Thorne. Too much time has past since the last Thorne novel. I hope a the next novel doesn't leap ahead too much.

Thorne makes me crazy but I love the books!

I like Mark Billingham's writing, both in the Tom Thorne and other books. Thorne is even more the maverick than other "cops with an attitude." It's a genre all it's own with troubled, break every rule, but highly intuitive police officers. And I like the genre. Thorne goes 'way over the top in this one. For good, compassionate reasons perhaps, but still... A touch of reality doesn't hurt from time to time .

Thorne worth reading

DI Thorne is not an unusual character for British crime fiction but he is enjoyable. I got caught up with the BBC televised mini series and then latched onto the books. Both are time well spent.
