Publisher's summary

Criminologist Martin Knight lives a gilded life and is a thorn in the side of the police. But then his wife, Liz, goes missing. There is no good explanation and no sign of Martin.... To make things worse, Liz is the ex-girlfriend of DCI Craig Gillard, who is drawn into the investigation.

Is it just a missing person or something worse? And what relevance do the events around the shocking Girl F case, so taken up by Knight, have to do with the present? The truth is darker than you could ever have imagined.

Good book.

I enjoyed this book. The writing is clearly professional and well done. I loathe reading amateur attempts that constantly remind you you’re reading/listening to a book. I easily got sucked into this story. The only small catch for me, and I believe it’s probably just a personal preference thing, is that the author clearly writes from a male perspective. Some male authors manage to neutralize this tendency, especially when discussing female characters, women, or laying out romantic exchanges. However, there was little doubt that the author was a man, simply based on the manner in which he approached these topics. I tend to prefer when these areas of the story don’t snag and sit slightly uncomfortably in my experience as I am listening. However, I will give the next book a listen and hope that this tendency becomes less obvious.

A Great Find!

British police procedurals are my favorite genre. I thought this was a great story. Good twists and turns with some character development and side stories. Excellent performance by Mr. York. I’m ready for the next one!

Enjouable

I did enjoyed the story. The mystery was intriguing. It took me a bit to understand the narrator but once I did it was a good book. I plan to get the next one. Worth a credit

Not Bad

First - the ending is not a cliffhanger. About halfway through, it is obvious who will end up being the "bad guy" but still interesting to read how the police reached their goal. For me, the most interesting part of this book was the side case of Girl F. I wouldn't read it again, but still a good book.

Entertaining

I enjoyed this one for the characters and the storytelling, even though I guessed who the killer was very early on. Will be back for more.

I enjoyed this book, but I could see it coming...

Not bad, but I'm not sure if I really like Craig Gillard. I figured out the ending early in the book. But I kept listening because the wiring was good and the narration was very good. Not sure if I'll listen to another one in this series.

first time

both the story and the narrator were good. this is the first time. that i have heard my name in an audiobook or that matter in any book. my first nam e is Shireen. i do not know if the author had used this particular spelling or a different one. but the narrator was spot on with the pronounciation of my name.

Alas…ish

It’s nice to have the lead male detective playing the bumbling (kinda bent) cop. Here have an orange juice, luv. (Compare and contrast with all the writers having all the female cops drop their guns only to be saved by some guy.) Now maybe they can finally drop this awful and degrading plot device. Tip of the hat for having no ‘smiles that didn’t reach…’
