Publisher's summary

Two sisters. One enchanted forest. And a reckless choice that could destroy kingdoms …

Taken away from her ordinary life, Rose Valrois finds herself in a world full of secrets and forbidden magic. There she meets her new stepsister, the enigmatic Princess Neeve, who will either become her best friend … or her worst enemy.

In the shadows of the magical Darkwood, Rose discovers danger and adventure in her quest for answers about the mysteries surrounding her. When she’s rescued by Thorne, the Dark Elf guardian of the forest, he binds her to the Darkwood and forbids her to speak of its secrets.

But secrets have a way of getting loose, especially when there’s hidden magic involved, and Rose falls deeper into the thorny tangles of her own past. Her sister, Neeve, is concealing dangerous powers of her own, and the two of them are soon entangled in a destiny that will bring them face-to-face on opposite sides of a deadly magical war.

Ultimately, Rose must risk her freedom, her world, and even her truest love to save her sister. Can she bear to make that sacrifice? Does she even have the choice?

Called “A fantastical series” by Publishers Weekly, USA Today bestselling author Anthea Sharp has crafted a lushly written fairy-tale trilogy weaving elements of “Snow-White and Rose-Red” with romance, magic, cozy fantasy, and secrets that that will change the fate of worlds.

Calling all YA romantasy lovers.

The series mainly follows Rose throughout the books, but we do see their journey as sisters. Poor Rose seems to be cursed as trouble always seems to follow her. I really enjoyed seeing the girls roam Darkwood and learning more about its inhabitants. Each book has its own unique set of issues and with each book the series gets better and better.
Rose is a bit impulsive, but I have to remember that she’s young. So it was great to see her mature as the series progressed. It was great seeing Neeva’s character soften a bit too. She’s a tough cookie.
The narrator, Amy Landon narration was pleasant. She speaks with a bit of a lilt. I sped up the speed and it wasn’t as noticeable. The narrator did a wonderful job portraying an array of characters and kept me engaged throughout the series.
Overall, I really enjoyed this series. I liked how the author created a unique story with the realms and Fae realm. I liked the different Magic system and wish there was more in the story. The twists the author incorporated in the story with magic and fire was marvelous! Perfect for YA romance fantasy lovers.

Growth and Time Passage

The story was well written and continued to keep my interest. I love that you feel like you are growing up with the characters and that they all clearly mature without losing their individual quirks.

such a great story to get into

good storyline, character progressions, suspense, plot development. wish it was longer 100%, but 30 hours for 3 books is pretty good. Just wanted more of the story!

Story great. Narration...not so much.

The story was great even with some obvious tropes. I don't know who's decision it was to make Rose such a whiney girl, but the constant sound of her whining drove me nuts. I'm hoping it was the narrator and not the author. This narrator is definitely not my favorite, regardless.

Great story line

I liked that the sisters grew up and trusted each other as adults. I enjoyed the fantasy of both worlds

Enjoyable Story

All in all, I enjoyed the retelling of “Snow-White and Rose-Red”. Some of the elements are obviously the same, while others are more subtle.

Amy Landon is a good narrator, but in this, she sounds robotic and mechanical. It’s almost as if it is an AI rendition using Amy’s voice. The diction, cadence, exclamations, timing all sound like a computer reading the story. Most notable in the passages best portrayed with meaningful warmth and compassion. It sounds extremely cold and unfeeling. Like a humanoid comforting a human in dystopia. “There, there, do not cry.”

I hope the publisher’s are not trying to pass off electronic narration as the real thing. It’s all fine and good, but it should be disclosed. Otherwise, they are playing us for fools. If it is indeed 100% Amy, then she does a fantastic job of mimicking electronic narration and should be recognized for it.

Surprised

I added this trilogy to my library on a whim, not thinking too much of it at first. All in all, this was quite enjoyable. There wasn't single thing I disliked. The story, characters and plot twists were well orchestrate. I definitely recommend this book. :)
