Publisher's summary

The Messenger must prepare for war.

With the Archetype damaged, Dash and his crew will need more than a quick fix to prepare for what's coming.

A secret facility known only as the Forge lies in cold sleep, built by the Unseen for the greatest war in history. Dash has no idea what awaits him there, but he hopes to find some kind of advantage in the war that is to come.

Meanwhile, on a distant world, an ancient order of monks protects a long-buried secret. They have guarded it for centuries, all in the hope that someday the Messenger might come and relieve them of their task.

Dash has answered that call...and he will not be denied.

Good but..

Feels like one really good book is being split to multiple small ones with a lot of filler in between...

Just as good as the first

If you've listened to the first, you'll like the second. I'm already on the third.

If you liked the first, you'll like this

Not much else to say that I didn't already say in my review for the first book in this series. It follows a lot of the same tropes, IE: simple characters and dialogue (most dialogue is still just exposition), some fun action sequences, and snarky humor. However it does break away from them a few times and gives us multiple perspectives this time, compared to only Dash's pov in the first book. We also get small tidbits of character feelings and and backstory occasionally. The potential is there, but it feels like the writer isn't giving all they got.

My biggest gripe, it feels like this books title "The Dark Between" and the next book "Star Forged" as well as the cover art should be swapped. There was quite the lack of The Dark Between in this book (it showed up briefly like twice) and instead revolves primarily around The Forge (an Unseen repair station) snd fighting another giant space mech (which is shown on book 3's cover instead). Just a nitpick.

All in all, still a fun and cheesy scifi story.

That being said, I'll likely go onto book 3, just not sure when. Hopefully it flushes out the characters some more and cuts the exposition down.

Yup

I am definitely locked into a full bindge of this series.
It has a real Michael Bay meets Gundam feel, and i am here for it.

Great Series

Book Two of The Messenger series. The story continues and it is entertaining!!! Dash matures quickly, the team finds itself in multiple fixes - some humorous, some serious (of course)! I find myself disagreeing with their plan of action sometimes - BUT it's not my story to tell!! I really like the characters, the interactions, the talents they all bring to the action - very interesting to listen to the interactions between everyone!! I especially am liking the inclusion of the Monks, who came along with the Level 2 Power Core!! I think these guys are eventually going to be a very integral part of the Team - they have been around an Unseen facility for centuries, have learned the language, and probably have knowledge they may not realize!

The most maddening part of these books - to me - is the length of time that it sometimes takes Dash to realize that everything at his disposal in the Archetype is advanced tech - even something as simple as the sword!! But, it's not my story to tell and those moments certainly fit what we know about Dash!!

Overall, this is a great series, a great second book - and I am continuing on in the series!! I can only recommend that if you are looking for an entertaining Sci Fi series you will not go wrong with this one!!!

enjoyable follow up book

The second book continues to expand the role of the messenger. His crew/team is growing, and he has his first meeting with the golden.

Great series loved all the books!

If you like Gundam and Star Wars.
You will love this book and the series. It's not a bite off those classic stories it just has the characters and space opera, with a kick ass Mech and 2 ancient people the Unseen who want to protect life at any cost wich our main character Dash and group of people who will do anything to help him stop the Golden a another extremely advanced culture that comes every 200 thousand years to try to destroy all life. Only the Unseen's messenger (Dash) and his allies can use the Unseen's technology to destroy the Golden.

Dash Is Dumb

The thing that really bothers me in this is Dash's lack of strategic and Tactical understanding. He could have used the sword to end a fight a lot quicker but instead chose to brawl. Which makes literally no sense.

Nice romp trying to save the universe

I enjoyed this, but preferred the 1st book. Great for young adults, (all ages, really) that like to dream of saving the world.
