Publisher's summary

From USA Today bestselling author Gayle Callen comes a fascinating historical novel of three courageous young women who aid a desperate British spy during the German occupation of Guernsey Island in World War II.

In 1940, Germany seizes control of Guernsey without a fight—but not without resistance. Innocent young teacher Catherine is forced to house a German officer. Shrewd waitress Betty seeks to elude the persistent Nazi determined to conquer her. And courageous nurse Helen cares for her patients—both British and German—while hiding a British spy in her seaside cottage.

Their fight against the injustices being enacted on their island home brings the women, the spy, and their enemies together in one night that will change all of their lives forever. Though none of them could foresee that the battle they fought that night would reach across time to 1997, when the tragic fallout ensnares Helen once more.

Thoroughly enjoyed it

Loved it. The narrator was spot on! Book was better than I thought. The positive remarks were in point.

The history, character development, unexpected ending

There was nothing I disliked about this book. The horrifying impact of war on the Guernsey was presented without excessive detail but clearly enough to help the reader understand.

Good story

Story held my interest. But I have to say the narration was grating. Listen to a sample before you purchase yo make up your own mind on that.

Very slow moving

I hate to criticize an author. Especially this one, because some of the writing was very good. But, this novel was very slow, and I didn’t even want to finish it. The love story from flat,VERY FLAT. And overall, it seemed like an inferior version of “The things we cannot say” by Kelly Rimmer. It didn’t help that the narrating was awful…SO awful. Ugh! The American accent! It was awful!!!

Frankly, the subject matter and setting give so much to work with… but this book was blech

Really Enjoyable!

I really enjoyed this book. My only small criticism would be is that at times it seemed a bit too sweet. Yet, having said that, I appreciate a little too sweet over a lot of the books I’ve listened to that had unnecessarily foul language that added nothing to the story. I learned a lot about what the island of Guernsey endured during WWII.

Very Good Story

I loved this story so much. Each of the characters were so interesting and unique while they worked together for a shared cause. I like historical fiction, but I get nervous to read WW2 or other war books because of gore / descriptions of wounds. This book was just fine for me! Any woundedness was minimally described so that it didn’t bother me. I found the narrators voice very soothing to listen to!
