About this listen

A frozen corpse.
A missing witness.
Strange voices that aren't there.

One cold night Lainie Goff, a glamorous young attorney on the fast track to a partnership at Portland's top firm, is found frozen in the trunk of her BMW on the local fishing pier.

Detectives Mike McCabe and Maggie Savage quickly uncover a long list of suspects: Lainie's boss, who was also her lover; an ex-priest who runs a shelter for runaway teens; an abusive stepfather who raped Lainie as a teen; and a creepy landlord who seems to know more than he should about her private life.

Still, there is no hard evidence until a mentally ill young woman who hears voices gives an island cop an eyewitness account he doesn't take seriously.

But when she too disappears, McCabe and Savage find themselves in a desperate race against time to stop a vicious killer before he rids himself of the only person who knows who he is.

Excellent Book set in Maine!

I really liked this book! The author does an excellent job painting a true view of Portland, Maine! The characters are interesting, and the story line was captivating! I didn't want to stop listening! The narrator does an excellent job with the appropriate amounts of influx in voice and speed of reading! Another excellent book!

Okay... Just Downloaded the Next In This Series!

Probably, I coulda' guessed the killer, but I liked listening to Mike and Maggie do it. James Hayman's created an intriguing ensemble up in Portland Maine and Stephen Mendel talks them into their own distinct lives. So far this series keeps me listening and looking forward to another visit Down East.

The tension among MIke, Maggie and everyone who fills McCAbe and Savage's chilly world is as cool as Hayman's plotting. He makes writing mysteries simple as falling through New England ice. Yep, I just bought "Darkness First" to keep up with these folks. Can't write a better recommendation, right?

Narrator yuck

This narrator is awful! Word by word reading, no expression at all! Whoever taught him to read did not do a good job. As a first grade teacher, I know!

I read this book years ago and loved it. now I let audible read it for me. just as good the second time!

I live in Maine. I recognized sites in Portland and "Harts" island, which is always fun. Narrator did a nice job. I could tell by the voice who was speaking in the story. I certainly saw that snowy winter night in the frigid cold at oceans edge. brr creepy beginning and fast moving murder mystery. I've already recommended to my reader friends.

4.5 stars detective thriller!

The Chill of Night is Book 2 of the 4 book McCabe and Savage thriller series. I reviewed Book 4 of the series, The Girl in the Glass, 3 months ago. The Chill of the Night is the better of the two novels, but 5 stars may be a bit excessive.

This is a police detective thriller set in Portland, Maine. McCabe and Savage are a detective team. This novel is very well written and narrated. It is a very worthwhile listen.

Good story, trite language

I wont be reading any more of this series. Disappointing. I like Maggie, strong women cop, but McCabe has weak personality. His comments about defense attorneys grate especially when he takes short cuts around the rules.
